Root [Virgin Mobile] Help with a new Modem.

Lurker
I recently updated my s3 to one of the new Cyanogenmod roms with 4.4.4(apparently 4.4.4 was out and i had no idea) and i applied the apn fixed. Everything is working great but it seems like my signal is weak even thought i live in the Dallas area, i can only get up to maybe 3 bars(if im lucky). I currently have baseband mk5 but was wanting to try to change to a new modem and see if there is a difference. I lurked alot and found some current threads that had some information but wanted to make sure that i have everything correct before i proceed.

1. I need to install a custom kernel, or does cyanogenmod come with a custom kernel already? if not which would be recommended, for someone who doesn't really mess with kernel options anyways.... I'm looking at kt747 for the kernel as mydian suggested in another thread.

2. I would have to use a latest bootloader. I am currently using philz touch 6, cwm v6.0.4.5 Would i need to use a different one? It should be one of the latest ones since i was able to flash over 4.4.4 cyanogenmod.

3. I would then have to flash over the new modem NDC or ND8, which I don't know which to even choose, or were those the sprint only modems? I guess its up to dealers choice but if anyone from my neck of the wood has any experience with them, please let me know.

Thanks for any advice and help. :)

Be careful. Do not flash a NDx modem unless you have a NDx bootloader on your phone.

Once you have the NDx bootloader on your phone you cannot go back to an older modem.

Nothing wrong with going down the NDx route... But once you do you can't go back to an older bootloader or modem

right, I would like not to have to but having little to no signal or choppy lte. Im not sure I have much of a choice unless i stay with it like this. BTW if i do go through with it, which bootloader should i use? or i kept on reading about using odin, is that what i should use for this procedure?

Modems have been a hot topic on this forum for a long time. Some folks think the new modems are better while others think the older modems are better. My wife has the ND8 modem and I have the NDC modem. Sometimes she gets a better signal and sometimes I get a better signal.

Read the thread below on how to install NDC. It's on the boost forum but applies to VM also.

I have installed the NDC modem and see a somewhat slight improvement but especially over LTE but network still jumps a bit but it seems more stable. I'll try this for awhile and see how it does around my area and work, and might try ND8 later on. Thanks for the help.
