Help Nancy Drew and the Mystery of The Notifications That Just Would Not Shut Up

JakeM80

Newbie
Hey all.

Just got my new s5 a week ago and I'm a big fan (It's a big switch from my s2.) But I'm having a small problem, one which I looked around for and didn't see anyone else having (lucky me?)

I've gone into settings/application manager and turned off the notifications for several applications (actually almost every single one, as I HATE notifications with the passion of a thousand burning suns.) But every other day or so the Notification settings reset? My phone makes noises and vibrates, and it's for one program after another that I know I told to give no notifications. Even more confusing, when I go back into application manager the "Show Notifications" box is checked again?

If it was just one program I'd probably just delete it (remember, thousand burning suns of HATE), but this has happened for at least 1/4 of my phone's applications, and keeps happening.

Is this something I'm doing wrong? Is it an issue with the phone? Nothing else resets, everything else seems fine, so really not sure what it could be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jake.

You have a friend here, I have turned all notifications OFF.
They are a PITA for me..., well, almost all of them. I left Txt Msg on, but I can control how often it beeps, or not at all.

Normally if you go into app mgr, and you turn off Notifications for each app there, that app should never bother you again.

In Settings, if you enter 'not' in the search bar, you will get a whole list of options to control Notifications. I left the blinker LED on, that is silent and not so worrisome to me.

Check each of the options you see listed, one of them somewhere has to be 'ON'.
I have Notification Reminder OFF

There is also a setting for Turn Off Notifications, put a check in that to negate All Notifications regardless of where they originate.

Well, you say that, but:

So far today alone I've gotten notifications from 2 games, Swiftkey, Plume, Instagram, and Clean Master, despite having turned on the Blocking Mode, switched off the application's "Notification" options in each individual program's Application Manager page, and their in-program notification settings (if the option was available.)

Help me defeat the evils of Notifications!

Anyone have any other ideas?

If this is a really, really specific issue (I.e. maybe just my phone and no one elses), is there another site I should head to? Is this one of those rare times when it would be best to go to Samsung themselves?

Try this out for me. The next time you get a notification in the notification area, long press on the notification, and select App Info. That should take you to the app listed in the settings/app. There, uncheck "Show notifications".
See if that makes a difference.

I don't know if this is what you meant when you said that you already tried "each individual program's Application Manager page" - if so, there is no reason for that app to be able to send you notifications to the notification area.

Final post on here, for anyone that does a search from their S5 having the same issue. Went to T-Mobile, they'd never seen anything like it before. They're sending me a new phone. They hadn't heard of this issue, and really weren't sure what could be done with the phone other than to simply bin it, so if you're phone's having the same issue, it looks like getting a replacement is the only way to go.

Hope this helps anyone else, and thanks to the previous posters that tried to sort this mess out.

Hi, if it's third party apps that are causing the problem (e.g. from the Google Play Store), you can only turn off the auto update from inside Google Play Store. Phil

As far as I know, "Blocking Mode" is only for things like calls, texts, email... Something with a "contact." I would try going to settings > application manager > [app] and uncheck "allow notifications." BUT, you'll have to do it from each individual app. Another way is to wait for the notification to come up, long press it, hit app info and it will take you to the same place to uncheck that box.
