Since the phone is fairly "new", we don't really know how long it will last. I'm fairly hopeful/confident that it will last 3-4 years at the very minimum without a significant drop in battery capacity (80% of original capacity). No guarantees of course.

While the battery is supposedly non-removable, iFixit has shown that it can be replaced - see here
I don't know where to get a reliable replacement though.

Thank you I did a google search and that's what I found 4 years I only ask cos I don't change that often.

I'm planing to replace my phone and I asked a friend of mine who has Nexus 5 and he said that starting out with a full battery it's generally 30% or below by the end of the day, and he is a really heavy user. Doesn't sound bad

Its all about how you use it.

I've been playing a lot of ingress lately, and that absolutely kills my battery. Its not uncommon for me to charge 2-3 times a day.

Before that, I had no problems going all day while streaming music or podcasts

I think, if you read the original post, his question relates more to what is the expected lifetime of the battery, since it is not replaceable. As jj14x stated, there are guides showing how to go about replacing the battery when the time comes. Some people won't feel comfortable replacing the battery themselves, but some will be willing (myself included) to give it a go. I have been reading about advances in battery development that will give two to three times the current life on a single charge, so I hope that this kind of improvement will be in place by the time I need to replace my battery.

You are correct. My post was aimed more at johns response but not completely off base from the original question.

When you look at the overall lifetime, the years it lasts is inversely proportional to the times charged/discharged. Heavy use will result in a shorter lifetime.

As for advances in battery tech were seeing in the news - those are going to take 5-10 years down the line before they meet the requirements for consumer goods and get manufacturing to scale. I wouldn't expect it for some time. The media tends to jump on it and claim the holy grail has been discovered, when that's not the case.

When the time comes, I hope to give battery replacement a go whether or not new battery technology has been developed in the meantime. My main concern will be how and where to obtain a good-quality replacement battery, and how to avoid the sharks.

Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, people on here will be posting information along these lines as and when they replace their batteries and have experience of the good and bad.

Good point, Bently. I know that some of the low cost batteries that are available on eBay haven't worked out well for me. It's difficult to know which ones will be good before you buy. Like you said, user feedback will be helpful.

I wouldn't trust e-bay for anything though!
