Title should have said live US tv...

There seems be be a bunch of choices out there but all I've looked at are filled with weird foreign channels and niche channels.
What's a good one that carries network programs?

Probably not going to find one. No us stations broadcast over the internet. I have dish network with a sling adapter. It sends my home cable right to my phone and tablet. It is AWESOME! I open "dish anywhere" app and watch anything that's on, live TV, even my DVR stuff I have recorded. But youre probably not going to find free live TV from the u.s. I'm pretty sure it would even be illegal.

U might try a VPN which would give u an address in US (or wherever else u want to be) making this easier. I don't know exactly how u would go about it, but I'll leave that to other.

Works for you--not for me. I didn't state the reason for searching for 'net-based channels. I have a cottage in an area with only 1 OTA channel. Cable/dish options are too expensive when only needed maybe 4 days per month.

That leaves the internet. I do have a solid cell signal there (AT&T). I can't go nuts due to limited data per month but as long as I watch in SD I can view several shows.

I installed that app and while there are some problems it's at least as legal as my current entertainment option--downloading torrents--and it's better than nothing. Which is what I have without the internet.

I understand. I was just saying what I use. Dish is at my house, so if I had a cabin, I could just stream my home cable while I was there. The only reason I mentioned sling adapter is that you can get a slingbox at your house, then get anything from your cable at home (whatever cable you use) on your phone. No matter where you are. Dish uses sling adapter, but sling "box" I believe works on most cable providers. I was just throwing it out there.

That Sling adapter sounds pretty neat. I am currently using the Bright House app. I have to be within range of my home network though. I'll have to check and see if Sling can be used with cable. $50 isn't bad to be able to watch TV anywhere I want.
Thanks.

Let me see if I understand this. .. slingbox (not the app) will allow me to control my cable dvr from my phone 200 miles away via a data connection, and put the program on the net so I can stream it to my phone?

I thought sling only worked within your home network.

From what I just read, the Sling adapter will allow you to watch your TV anywhere. The article say it will work with a cable box too, not just Dish.

Here's the article I read.

It works over data as long as the sling box has an internet connection at your house. The "sling adapter " is for dish, the "sling box" works on any cable. It hooks to your cable box or DVR, then you can stream content to your phone or tablet via the app or to a PC on the web. Its a really cool device. Your phone doesn't have to be on the same network. It does use a good amount of data depending on your settings in the app (HD or SD)

Speaking of data usage-- any idea if the process has a significant amount of data overhead? Encrypting, etc.
I'd hate to watch a 2G movie and find out it actually "cost" 3.

Ya know, I'm not sure on the actual overhead usage. I use it to watch the news on my tablet on my lunch break at work. I've never seen the size of a stream, I usually watch live TV on it.
