What happened to my SD card?

My notifications bar had an icon of an SD card pop up today, it said "blank card or unsupported files". Then it gave me an option to format it. I don't have much on the card so i formatted it. I did lose a lot of music and some pictures, but i am puzzled as to what mayhave happened. Has anyone had this before? My phone won't even recognize the 16gb card that i have had for 3 or 4 years. I have another card, 32gb, that i will use in the mean time. But i am afraid of the same thing happening to the 32gb card. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Phone is a Galaxy S5 sport, 16gb.

Thanks.

Could be the card is going bad. Say you've had it 3 or 4 years. Flash SD storage does have a finite life, a certain number of read/write cycles and eventually it will wear out. Try the new card, keep an eye on things, and make sure you keep it backed up, ALWAYS!. MP3s can be re-downloaded, but your photos are irreplaceable.

Thanks. All is well with the new card. I am going to get another one as a precaution.
