Adding a password for the Gmail app?

Hi,

I'm wondering if there is a way to add a password for the gmail app only?

The reason for this is that the gmail app is the only app on my phone that contains anything that I consider worthy of protection. So if I could add a password for it, I could remove the phone PIN lock, which would be much more convenient.

And if this isn't possible, is it possible to remove the gmail app altogether? I very rarely check my mail on my phone, so I would actually consider it better to not have the app at all, but AFAIK that's impossible.

Phone: Sony xperia sola
Android version: 2.3.7.

I think you can get apps that require a pin to open certain apps, but I think they require root. Here are some examples I found, you'll want to check permissions and pricing and functionality. There are also many more.

AppLock seems to be working on my phone without root! Thanks!
