Help How to cancel a voice-activated "get driving directions" Google search

This is my first smartphone, bought mainly because it was small and fit easily in my pocket. Sony Xperia Tipo (ST21a) running Ice Cream Sandwich. I don't have much experience using them.

To test it out, I pressed the microphone on the Google search bar, and said "Google, directions to __________" and named the city and state. After about a 30 seconds, the Google Lady acknowledged the request and said "In 1000 feet, turn left on Main Street".

But now the Google Lady won't shut up. All night, every couple of hours, she yells out "In 1000 feet, turn left on Main Street."

How do I cancel that "get directions" search?

P.S. I've already tried the Back button, to no effect. It's as though the search is running in the background.

Use the Back button (shown in lower-left, below).

Thanks, but I have already tried the back button. It seems to have no effect. It's as if the query is running in the background.

P.S. Also, my home screen is a little different. There's a Google search bar on it, and that's where my driving directions search was initiated.

On my device, the command opens up google maps, I just use the back button until I've exited the program. What does your device display when navigating as you shouldn't just get audio?

I had navigated back to the Home screen, which has a Google search bar on it with a microphone icon. That's where my "driving directions" search was initiated. I have shut my phone down since then, to install a memory card, and now the voice is gone.
