I used my chromecast. I'll have to research further to see if they switched codecs, but I am pretty sure it's proprietary to Vudu. All I know is it does screen cast to chromecast while playing locally.

Now....I just found another drawback that could be a deal-breaker. Vudu does not allow HD streaming or downloads on their mobile apps. Seriously, screw these guys. That's such an arbitrary and stupid limitation. Fortunately I've not given them any money, all of my movies are either free or the digital download of a physical copy that I purchased at Wally World.

MX player doesn't work with Google Play Movies. similar to VLC, it only works with MP4 or some other format that Play Movies does not use. and i am sure Vudu doesn't use either. i have used MX Player to cast videos to a chrome cast that i downloaded from Youtube, like the aforementioned Hogan's Heroes episodes. but the issue is Play Movies and Vudu, which use some proprietary format that no local streaming app supports.

Bjacks, what did you use to screen cast locally? Chrome cast only streams locally if you use a MP4 or other well-known video codec format. what does Vudu use for their offline content?

Or you can try to use some free converter to make the format available for google ? but I am not very suggest dong so , for the lose quality compared to the origianl videos

Given that Google Play Movies do not use any manner of odd codecs whatsoever, there's no need for any sort of free converter.
