Help Can the default Messaging app be changed and still use Swype keyboard?

I'm a brand new smartphone user and bought a new Alcatel One Touch Pop ASTRO (released less than 3 weeks ago) a couple days ago. I'm on T-Mobile. 'Been spending numerous hours googling and cannot find an answer to my question. Nor did my T-Mobile rep know the answer. So here goes:

I dislike the default text messaging app with the green bubbles and have read that it cannot be changed or customized. But I love the Swype keyboard (v.1.7) that it utilizes.

I have read and love the images of an app called "GO SMS Pro" and am very much ready to download and install it. But I need to know if I will be able to still use the Swype keyboard? I do not want to sacrifice using it.

1) Can one download a different messaging app and still use the Swype keyboard, or are the two (top half chat window + the bottom keyboard) married to each other?

2) Is there another customizable messaging app (change colors, add pictures and emoticons) I can download and still use Swype with it?

Thanks if anybody knows an answer for sure.

You can use any keyboard with any text app. If you have Swype as your default keyboard it'll just pop right up for you.

Personal preference but try Textra instead of Go(anything). Textra is nice and quick.

Welcome aboard.
Thank you so much, Clementine! God love ya.

I read a little about that Textra a couple hours ago and was intrigued. I may do just that. But thanks for letting me know that the keyboard app is modular from the chatting app.

Sincerely,

Toddskins

P.S. Oh, one more question? When you have more than one SMS app on your phone, how do you tell Android which one to use as the default?
