Russia to compete with Android? Don't laugh...

The PearlyMon
Here's the story -

http://www.slashgear.com/russia-wants-to-build-its-own-smartphone-os-19384241/

"Russia doesn't want to depend on technology from Western countries like the US. To reduce its dependence on Western tech, Russia plans to build its own smartphone operating system to replace iOS and Android from Apple and Google. Russian minister of communications Nikolai Nikiforo recently announced plans to replace Apple and Google's operating systems with a new open-source OS based on Sailfish.

Sailfish is an operating system that was developed in Finland by Jolla. Jolla reportedly met with Russian tech community members earlier this month to begin the development of the new operating system. Nikiforo says that his goal is to reduce the dependence on foreign technology over the next decade to 50%."

It's important to understand what the Sailfish OS is -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailfish_OS

"Sailfish OS is a mobile operating system combining the Linux kernel, the Mer core and proprietary software written by mobile software developer Jolla."

And we're not talking about a lame outbreak of Ubuntu or a web OS or Cyanokisoft here.

"The Sailfish OS and the Sailfish software development kit(SDK) are based on the Linux kernel and Mer. Sailfish OS includes a multi-tasking graphical shell called "Lipstick" built by Jolla on top of the Wayland display server protocol. Jolla uses free and open-source graphics device drivers but theHybris library allows use of proprietary graphics device drivers for Android. Jolla's stated goal is for Sailfish to be open source eventually.

Sailfish OS can run Android applications through a proprietary compatibility layer."

The politics are going to run fast and deep on this one.

More importantly, this could well be the competition that the market needs.

Like the man said in Ghostbusters - they have the tools and they have the talent.

They also have the funding and a government edict.

And that Mer layer?

That's basically the codebase, updated, that Nokia was poised to unleash when the Microsoft quisling Elop, along with a greedy board swallowing his sales pitch, buried the project and gutted the company.

So we're also not talking about some cul de sac named Tizen here.

Could this be the sleeping giant and perhaps the operating system in our future?

The app compatibility isn't a silver bullet - yet.

But it's not nothing, especially considering that that doesn't represent the native app potential.

Well I'll be damned if I'm going to ever use a commie phone.

EDIT: Yes, I fully appreciate the irony of this statement given that most of our smartphones are likely manufactured in the PRC.

I'm definitely interested to see how this goes. I've played with Sailfish on my Nexus 4 in the past and found it rather promising. Plenty of room to grow, of course, but I thought it was a far more compelling option than either Firefox OS or Ubuntu OS (which I also played with...).
Ok, *very* clever port and installation process.

Quoted for irony and justice. :D

ok.. sure why not...

but for devices .. built for Russia with their OS...
I feel some slimy on the horizon... full of spyware...

So, I'm out here, posting my fingers to the bone and you didn't follow the link -

Part of the reason that Russia wants to move towards its own technogly is due to sanctions it was hit with after annexing Crimea in 2014. The major goal however is to create an operating system for smartphones that isn’t tainted by any foreign government access.

Apple and other firms have been asked by the Russian government in the past to disclose source code so that Russian authorities could investigate to determine if the US government had back doors to gain access to secure communications, those firms refused to give Russia their source code.

LMAO - I don't really care about NSA spying or anything else - but - if it turns out that Russia is somehow the countermeasure for that - get the popcorn because the show is going to freaking high-larious! :D

I read your stuff.. good enough high level summary.
did not link through.. because it is way to early in the process for me to dig deeper.
may not even come to light!

but.. my bias to all gov spying on us... and commie countries doing more so.
I would read between what they say.. they want to see how USA is doing it.. so that can do it too or how NOT to do it!

Hell yeah I'm interested,a perfect excuse/reason to hang on to the NEXUS 6 for a while.
Just don't tell it that it's possibly being re-purposed as a guinea pig...........

If the NSA is spying on our phones, you can be 100% certain a Russian government developed OS will have all sorts of backdoor access for the FSB.

Perhaps.
I'm not worried about that from any government in particular, they all engage in shenanigans.

Ditto w/the private sector/corporations.
The lines between govt & business are blurred at minimum, even here in 'Murika.

I'll take the same measures as I do w/any phone.
If something doesn't look right,it's uninstalled, from the app level or the entire O/S if necessary.

It'll get a fair look from me,just as any ROM does & take it from there.

Not worried about ID/data theft,no more (or less) than I do w/a desktop or mobile.

Only a fully open source OS will withstand scrutiny will ensure that no government hasn't forced back doors into it. And that means every line of code must be open and no proprietary drivers on the phone, plus every antenna, router, switch, ISP, firewall, or anything else assisting in the communication from the source to the destination. All of that disregards legitimately granted access through the warrant process. Pretty much surveillance, legal and illegal depending on your tolerance for civil liberties abuse, is going to happen no matter what.

Well I'll be damned if I'm going to ever use a commie phone.

Believe it or not, China Inc. can be as capitalist and money grubbing as Disney Inc.
