There will be a nuclear war and from the extreme radiation and harsh conditions WE - the roaches will take our rightful place as the REAL masters of the world!!!!

But maybe over time we might become lazy... lethargic and brainless... and so the cycle sadly repeats... xD

It's not a question of if. It's a question of when will there be another mass extinction. And when it does take place, provided it is not an actual world ending event, a dominant species will eventually evolve. Will it be as intelligent as us, perhaps. It might even be more intelligent. It might not waste its time bickering, feuding, and killing over petty, insignificant differences such as skin color, place of birth, religion, sexual orientation, or any of the other thousands of delusional reasons humankind finds for validating their perceived superiority over others that also bleed red.

Actually, there's a fair amount of research in support of the idea we're already in the middle of earth's sixth mass extinction event. It would appear human activity is the biggest driving force behind its occurrence.

So, assuming we don't wipe ourselves out and instead get our act together, the dominant species after the next mass extinction might well still be humans.

For only the humans to perish would make for a very unique catastrophe. If it were possible for only human extinction and no consequences to anything else, as the author of the question suggests, the cause would almost certainly be biological, effecting whatever is unique to humans alone. Which would also almost certainly be caused by our own doing. I wouldn't ponder the possibilities of a human comeback. If I were the drafter of the Master Plan, I would make damn sure it never happened- again.
