Anyone NOT in the U.S., please answer a question for me!

Scandinavia is the most ad free zone I've ever been though. Oh, and TV channels in Europe... Far less commercials. And none for lawyers and medication.

Yep, much less crap... Main street of helsinki:

I hope we will never see the day of neon lights... It is so cheap!

Fine.

Don't watch our television.

That just leaves more for us.

(I wish I didn't have to explain that I'm kidding.)

I was aboard an American cruise ship and they had some to the various news channels. I decided to check them out just to see what they are like. I found them to be filled with a lot of propaganda for whatever political slant that news channel was associated with. At home (Canada), we do have dedicated news channels, but they do not seem to be so politically affiliated compared to the US news channels I saw.

I do like watching US TV shows. My favourite one this season is Agent Carter.

Yeah - I grew up on the border and watched the CBC as much as I did the American networks.

I can say without prejudice that the CBC has gone every bit as downhill as the American networks.

I particularly remember the 72 Olympics.

USA TV - event, five minutes of screaming commercials, event.

CBC - event, five minutes of no announcers, some camera panning, low voice = "ok, they're getting ready to do something" - event.

CBC on the Olympics? Did you see any Olympics between the ads lately? I missed the winning play at a curling match thanks to Mastercard.

America replaced news services with infotainment decades ago. Huntley, Brinkley, Friendly, Morrow, and Lehrer are gone. :(

As staff I'm not allowed to reply to your comment that you don't think that your news is politically contaminated - all I can do is thank you for tossing out the political hand grenade and reminding everyone -

Political statements need to go into the Politics and Current Affairs forum, thank you, etc etc etc.

:)

I'm not the biggest Marvel fan, but Agent Carter was a fun show. Agents of Shield totally ran off the tracks for me this season.

I don't watch regular tv much.. only see commercials when I use HULU.

going around Fort Worth downtown and Dallas.. and other areas... I don't feel that it is overly advertised.

Being born and raised in the same backwater mountain town, I have no concept of the outside world. One of the things that I dislike the most about America is how ad heavy everything is. Everything. From the moment we wake up in our own homes there is advertising around us, while driving, shopping, working. Every place I go, every time I turn my head, there is some commercial or advertising in sight. And I'm in a small town, it's immeasurably worse in a big city. It's even at the gas pumps now, a small video screen that only plays commercials while someone is pumping gas

And I wonder if other countries have to put up with this?

Hi all.
I and my wife were living in France with everything you're talking about for 33 years (1998).
Tired of this, we spent 10 years in the North Yukon (-53c) close to Alaska .
Without TV, phone, hydro power, water and neighbourgs. The marvellous bush life.
I can tell you that we had the 10 most beautiful years of our life.
You're all right we need just to spend our money paper so to do this they just use all they can to suck ou money ( heavy advertising/fashion etc..)
It is a personal opinion and I do not want to fight but for me ,TV just make people wash brain, it is a very dangerous weapon.
I don't want to disturb, please be lenient.

I rarely ever watch CBC anymore. The only thing I would watch on CBC is hockey. CBC has over the years lost a number of sports broadcasts. I think it was around 15 years ago that TSN (The Sports Network) won exclusive rights to broadcast CFL (Canadian Football League) games. They did a much better job than CBC. Prior to this season, TSN did a lot of hockey broadcasts and I though they always did a better job than CBC. This season, Rogers won the contract, but they are not as good as TSN. Rogers is keeping CBC Hockey Night in Canada around. Too much tradition and probably too much backlash if HNiC went away. I think they'd bring back the death penalty if Rogers took Don Cherry off the air. :)

CBC does have a few gems over the years. Back in the late 90's, they had Da Vinci's Inquest, a show about the coroner in Vancouver. It's one of my favourite crime shows of all time, rivaling shows like Law & Order. Right now, I've been into Murdock Mystries. It's pretty much CSI: Toronto circa 1900.

I must say, that when infomercials first started, I was hooked. I remember watching the entire episode for the Gravity Edge exercise equipment.

My apologies.

I'm not the biggest Marvel fan, but Agent Carter was a fun show. Agents of Shield totally ran off the tracks for me this season.

I watch both. Agent Carter has the right mix of seriousness and humour for me. AoS doesn't feel as serious. I still like both. I hear that Agent Carter is renewed for another season.

Totally agree about Don Cherry and the massive importance of Hockey Night in Canada! I grew up on it. Don't get to see it anymore. Also a big thumbs up for Da Vinci's Inquest. :)

I watched AoS, Blacklist, and Doctor Who seasons late on Netflix - no commercials lol.

I've traveled to China, Taiwan, Thailand, Germany, France, Switzerland, Canada and Mexico...

Its the same everywhere, inner cities have advertising everywhere. The further you get away from the inner cities the less the advertising.

I used to always try to catch him back in the 90's. I don't always agree with him, but I respect the fact that he is not afraid to express his opinions. Now, I'm not so into him anymore.

You know what I miss? John madden and his overly simplified explanations.

"You see, what you gotta do is take the ball here, and run it past this line here, that's called a touchdown!!"

Thanks old man, football would be so much more confusing without you ;p

Actually, I found football to be confusing when I first started watching it. It took me a while to figure out the rule. John Madden might have sped that process up for me a bit. Of course, it could confuse things as I watched Canadian football when I was young. Although there are a lot of similarities, there are some very important differences between Canadian and American football.
