System Memory

Guest
Hi Guys!
Just wanted to get this straight once and for all from you, the experts.
I have bought this cheapo Chinese device (yeah, I know...)
The guy selling it swore on his life that the device had 12gb of storage for app installation.
I didn't quite believe that so I asked him to send me a benchmark screenshot to see what was the storage situation and he sent me this:
KAyugUv.jpg

So as it says, while it has 12.5 GB of "Internal Storage", it only has 0.68 GB available of System Storage...
And my understanding is that, lots of apps simply Won't install anywhere else besides the System Storage, and even if you can Move the app to the internal storage, it will Still take up some space on the system storage...
Am I understanding this correctly?
If that is so then, does that mean that after my apps use up that measly 680 MB of space on the device I am "SOL" and I won't be able to install anything else on the device??
Thanks for the help!

The trouble is that phrases like "internal storage" and "system storage" are imprecise, or used to mean different things by different people.

So to check this I went against all my principles and installed Antutu on my phone, and it tells me that I have 25.59GB "system storage". That's the precise size of the /data partition on my phone, which is indeed where apps and data are installed.

My advice would be to cancel the purchase. This looks like a phone that's still using a Gingerbread-era storage model of allocating /data and /sdcard as separate spaces, in which case you will most likely have exactly the problem you anticipate. And the person selling it is either knowingly lying or doesn't understand how these things work himself.

Given that the "unified storage" model (where /data and /sdcard share the same space) has been around since Android 4.0 I've no idea why some cheap Chinese phones are still set up this way, but for some reason it's not uncommon.

Or, the 1 GB is /system and it is using the proper storage model.

Anyway - really - we have an app *specifically* to answer this exact question.

If you're going to buy anything, insist on seeing the Storage Truth.

I have exactly the same problem on a VKWorld2015 phone, with 8gb of unusable storage. I bought it from Chinavasion and they say (after innumerable emails and instructions to reset, etc) that that's how the phonw is so tough luck. I contacted VKWorld direct and they have sent me a fix, which was 25 files zipped up. I have extracted the files, but don't know what to do next. Can anyone help?

Well we know what you tell us, so right now we know you have a zip file but have no idea what's in it - so I'll be amazed if anyone can answer based on just that ;).

Does that help?

As near as I can tell, it looks like they've sent you the software image of your phone, in pieces and without instructions - possibly with modifiable source, likely with binary images.

Even if you did this for a living, I doubt that you would get anywhere.

If you complain again, they get to tell you that they sent you everything.

There's a name for that behavior.

OK thanks for the info. I've mailed them back asking what I should do with it, so I'll see what they say.

Keep us posted and best luck. :)
Well so far no reply from the manufacturers, and the vendor (Chinavasion) have abandoned me. I have downloaded 'app2sd' which is helping, but it's tedious, and the results from the phone are erratic.

I'm afraid that I'm going to go down the iphone route. My daughter has one, and it does everything she wants with no problems. It costs a lot, but so far I've wasted 4 days messing around with this thing.

Thanks for the help you've given me.

You're welcome!

Sorry it didn't work out.

Remember if you think about changing your mind in the future - the iPhone is a premium device - if you want less hassle, premium devices are best.

The Android premium devices are where you'll want to be when you come back.

The Chinese knock-offs tend to just bork the entire experience and are a lot harder to use to do less, as you've discovered.

Enjoy your iPhone in good health, and hope to see you again where you can get a chance to experience a proper Android. :)
