ZTE has a new lockdown on their devices that only KingRoot seems to get thru (NOT KingoRoot). Try that apk.

Thanks! I tried that app KingRoot and it failed like all the other ones. Any other ideas or apps I could try? I really don't need to root the phone. I just want to use my mobile hotspot for internet on other devices. I tried pdanet and other apps like foxfi but they don't work anymore. Any help would be awesome. thanks

Unfortunately I think ZTE are catering for the requirements of US carriers, and are now really trying to ensure those devices sold by carriers can't easily be rooted and modified. Which means if you do want tethering enabled now, you're probably going to have to pay the carrier for it. Of course with a rooted device, you can easily enable tethering yourself without having to pay the carrier for a tethering plan.

FWIW many Chinese phones are actually easily rooted, and the manufacturers usually don't go to any lengths to ensure they're firmly locked-down, and you can use something like Kingroot or Framaroot with many of them. But then carriers like China Mobile and Unicom don't care if the device is rooted and if you're tethering or whatever. They don't charge for tethering, also there's not much carrier bloat and customizing, or subsidies either.

ZTE Speed is a Boost Mobile (Sprint) phone.. USA

Did you heavily swamp your RAM (until you have ridiculous lag) with running apps and processes? Some ppl also run antutu benchmark before opening KingRoot. Do that and try again. Many times cuz it takes more than once for some ppl.. That seems to be the way this app works with many successes on these newer ZTE phones and others..

WiFi Tether Router (paid) by Fabio Grassi seems to work with ZTE phones but I don't remember if you'd need root for that apk tho..

I rooted using that apk major lag

Try this with Kingroot

Download Antutu Benchmark and start testing
Wait until it hits 10% then open up Kingroot
Then wait, this sometimes brute forces it to root.

the ZTE Speed is Boost Mobile and the Awe is MetroPCS, unfortunately. The Warp4G is the hardware equivalent to the Awe. I'll never do metro as you'll most likely lose service as you leave the town you bought it in.. Seen it a million times. The Awe in itself is quite a decent device, certainly but ur stuck w/Metro - not worth the change if you live in the country. Sprint bought Nextel (which owned Boost) and Nextel had more coverage than AT&T with IDEN towers. IDEN has/is being reprogrammed for LTE.. FYI [emoji41]

Thanks for the info looks like warp will be getting lollipop

No the dev on the awe will work on it I really wanted the speed not sure if its locked and cm 5.1.1 to start
Warp4G? No locked boot loader that I'm aware of. That was the Warp Sync that slapped us stupid with that locked boot & no ADB, Lmfao. Got around it using Flashify.apk after Root. The Speed came out about the same time or right after. ZTE is locking them all down now. They actually told me Something about it now literally being illegal to manufacture devices with known Root exploits in the country/place of manufacturing. Dunno if they was blowing smoke up my @$$ but that's what they told me.. [emoji28]

TBH, I don't know about the Speed but so far the only ROMs available for the Warp4G are SuperR's and mine.. Both stock but mine has a little bump to it with a few scripts and the like. I benchmarked over 40000 with JB 4.1.2 & cdz's OC kernel. Warp4G is running KK at the moment. Worth a check. I'm shying away from the Speed because the battery is not removable and Warp4G has better cameras anyway. Just a thought..
