Accessories SD Card Specs for Tab S 10.5?

Dave McKeen

Newbie
Newbie question. I’m considering buying a Tab S 10.5. How can I find the exact specs for the high capacity SD cards compatible with the this tab? Samsung lists this in the tab's specs:

External Memory/microSD™ Capacity Up to 128GB
SDHC/SHD SD Card

Newegg lists this and similar cards:

SanDisk 128GB 128G microSDXC Ultra 48Mb/s microSD
micro SDHC SDXC Class 10 UHS-I C10 Memory Card

Will that work? The Samsung spec for the Tab S doesn’t mention SDXC. But it does mention “SDHC/SHD SD Card”. What is “SHD SD”? Newegg doesn’t recognize it.

On the Samsung site, below the product description of the Tab S 10.5 are some “People who viewed the Tab S 10.5 also viewed...” items that included this SD card:

Samsung - 64GB microSD Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card – Orange Best Buy $89.99

The description doesn’t match their SD card spec for the Tab S 10.5! Is this a “mountain out of a mole hill” thing?

Thanks - Dave

Hi Dave. I bought my Tab S at Amazon and went with their popular "also purchased with" SD card.
Samsung 64GB EVO Class 10 Micro SDXC . It was 33 bucks at the time and has given me no grief.
I don't know that it was a great deal.. but was handy. I'm sure other members will have some input as to a recommended SD card purchase.

Howdy olbriar, Thanks for that. Here's what I just got back from Samsung:

You can use a micro SD or micro SDHC card to add additional memory space to Galaxy Tab® S 10.5 device. The device has been tested to support up to a 64GB memory card. We do not have the tested information about the SDXC card compatibility with Galaxy Tab® S 10.5.

I'm not sure I understand fully, but that's why I'm here- for practical experience.

What other accessories do you recommend? Case? Keyboard dock? Popcorn?

Hi, I am new to this board and came to find some help, in answer to this Query I have only had the tablet for a few days but I am using a Scandisk 128Gb card which works fine and is recognised by the tablet.

Thanks geordie2. The "SDHC" part is what I was looking for.

Thanks also Hook. I ordered an SDXC, so appreciate the confirmation yours works OK. I'm curious about Samsung tech's response. Doesn't make sense.

There's no such thing as SHD SD.

Up to 32 GB, it's an SDHC.

Above that comes SDXC where the X stands for extended.

It simply has higher capacity by making each storage unit larger. Got a 2 kB file? It's going to occupy 32 kB, the storage unit size - just like sectors on a hard drive in your pc.

In both cases, they'll be mounted as vFAT devices.

At the first report of a working SDXC card, as @olbriar did above, you're safe - the controller either understands SDXC or it doesn't.

Never buy cards from eBay or Craigslist, you're bound to get something counterfeit - and counterfeit cards have done more to confuse the situation than anything else.

By definition, there's no such thing as a 128 GB SDHC card - that's like saying it's a truck-boat. If it's 128 GB, it's SDXC.

It simply means that they have not run official tests in their labs with capacities greater than 64Gb. Device manufacturers have always done this bit of back-end covering. They used to say up to 16Gb when 32 GB didn't even require a different controller. They will only claim compatibility if they have the test data in house.

I resent the earlier reference on this board, This card is not any type of copy or forgery. it is an unbranded memory card. I bought it after the tablet was tested by "Which", the magazine of the worlds best and truly independant testing organisation for consumers.

Included in their test report late last year was this extract

"You can expand the memory by up to 128GB thanks to the micro-SD card slot. This is very generous and means you don't have to worry about running out of space on your tablet."

I took a punt for £9.99, remarkably cheap compared to updating an Ipad,

I don't understand what you're resenting or taking so personally.

Counterfeit sd cards have become the second largest smartphone problem behind malware.

I mentioned it to raise consciousness.

Every week we have someone posting that they've been taken.

Before we started warning people we were getting up to 50 posts a day, every day, by people taken in.

If you have a cheap card that's working for you, bravo.

Most are not so lucky and resenting a public service announcement makes no sense.

Furthermore, the post you quoted is quite accurate - manufacturers only rate sd card capacity on their websites and spec sheets for what THEY have tested. Not someone else. And manufacturers don't test or spec very much in this area.

Our news site even featured an article last year citing what the true upper limit was on a number of models, by name, to help sort out the exact confusion that is at hand in this thread.

As for perfect information, be offended all you want that the test organization you cited or if the vendor you bought from believes that 128 GB SDHC cards exist, because they simply don't.

Be offended at them, I'm just the messenger.

And if it's 128 GB, then it's an SDXC.

Not SDHC.

Hi i need help, i just have bought a Lexar 128g SDxc mico card, and it wont work at all on my samsung tab S 10.5, i cant even format the card on my PC, tried a few programs to help format still cant read it, iam using the SD card reader that it came with also. Them the links for the card and tab i got.

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers...axy-tab-s-10-wi-fi-16gb-charcoal-grey/612444/

http://www.amazon.com/Lexar-High-Performance-MicroSDXC-Reader-LSDMI128BBNL633R/dp/B00O1M21H8

I have this exact problem with my Tab S 10.5 LTE T805, the difference is I use this card:
https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-Professional-microSDXC-UHS-II-LSDMI128CBNL1000R/dp/B00U77V5KU/

I have sent the card back, seeing how it seemed faulty, and it got replaced with a new one which worked for a couple of months, but now stopped working as well.

Apparently Lexar and Samsung don't work well together. DON'T BUY LEXAR CARDS FOR SAMSUNG DEVICES. EVER!

In fact, I will STOP BUYING LEXAR WHATSOEVER. They are expensive and you run the risk of it not working.
