For those already on android, what apps to put on the evo first?

hmmm that would be cool... if you find one or hear of one let me know.. I miss my old radio station and would love to listen to them in the morning :)
 
This app saved my life... SMS commander, if you ever lose your phone or it gets stolen, you can text off someone eles phone a password (that you make) and you can choose between, turning the volume up and making it ring, bring up the GPS location of it, or turn on your phone if its off or lock your phone if its on. I actually lost my phone and used the GPS tracker to find it with someone who was kind enough to give it back
 
Maybe a mod can stickie this for all us noobs out there wondering what to do when we get our Evo, and to help people pass the time looking up cool apps and letting the rest of us know!

There is; I just can't remember the name of it right now. I shouldn't be on here (working on a lab report), but I'll try and find it quickly.

Here is the best radio app I've found on Android to date. All your local stations hundreds of others as well. This app is 100% streamed so it doesn't care if you have a radio antenna or not but it isn't free anymore, if you want a good radio and don't mind paying 2.99 might be worth a try.

Thanks for the link...I took a look and found the piece to see if it could pick up the station you want. Unfortunately, it couldn't stream the station I want...KUBE93 out of Seattle...the place I miss so, so much.

It really depends if the station streams its signal, not all of them do. I wish you luck on the search though. I know of alot of great stations that don't stream sadly, if a station doesn't stream doubt you'll find any radio app on any platform that will get the station.
 
It streams...I listen to it using iHeartRadio on my 8900. There's got to be an app out there that will replicate what iHR does.

Okay I feel like a real dumbass now! I went to the site and it has an Android app for it...why didn't I do this before?
 
I love this thread!!! Good job djdisturbed. Lots of cool ideas. Now I have a long list of apps to install. Man, I can't wait for the EVO.
 
Wow there is too many Apps! I am coming from a Touch Pro 2 windows mobile phone and that was all new to me. It was my 1st smart phone. But now I am so excited about the EVO that I just made a folder in my favorites and bookmarked several apps and that appbrain site. I want a shopping list app which I have on my phone now and Sirius doesn't have an app out yet for Android and I know there is Pandora, Slacker and more. But I feel like there's so many shopping apps and I just want one that does what I need and one radio app Hard to pick which one I am going to get. But I guess I can try a couple and uninstall what I don't want. I think this phone is going to be too cool! And most of you already have Android but it's going to be all new to me. My friend is wanting want to and he has the BB Tour. So he's not even used to HTC or a Touch Phone at all. I at least am coming from the HTC Touch Pro 2.
 
Yes, I agree there's just too many Android apps. I've decided to not get an EVO and just stay with my Blackberry....NOT!!!!

Thank you Djdisturbed for an excellent thread. It and all the contributions by the other members are extremely helpful as I begin building my own app list.
 
I see where Google Voice is mentioned several times, but I don't think it has been emphasized as a must have application. First, Voice is a big step, but worthwhile. The big step is that you are issued a new number for life. You don't absolutely have to have a new Google number, but many features will not be available if you don't get a new Google number.

Sure, it's a pain initially. You have to tell everyone that your number has changed, etc., but you need to treat this as a new number because you have to train your friends and family to call you on this new number. The new Google Voice number aggregates all your phones into one number. Thus, your home number, your work number, your cell number are all used with Voice. If you get a call to your Google Voice number, all your phones ring simultaneously. No forwarding, no multiple voicemail boxes to check.

When you get a Voicemail on your Google Voice, you get a transcript of the message that was left in your Voice mailbox. Also, you can get an email transcript to your email. You can have multiple announcements on your voicemail depending upon who is calling: One for family, one for friends, one for business or everyone else. You can even have an announcement for your girlfriend and another one for your spouse.

Voice is integrated into your Android phone. You can elect to disable your regular text program (suggested) and use only your Voice program for texts. Thus, your voicemail and texts are combined into one list.

There are too many features to list, but here are a few that are cool: When you receive a call on your cell phone and you get home or to work while you are on the call, you simple press * and the call will be transferred to your landline. (The caller doesn't notice.) You can add an extension to your Chrome browser that duplicates the Voice features so you can make long distance calls free (you dial the number in the browser, it calls your landline and when you answer it connects the long distance call). You can also text from your browser and it appears as if you are texting from your phone.

I still don't fully understand what Google Voice does or if I even needed it but I got a number from an invite a while back and it's a different extension of 3 numbers but the last 4 are the same. Will it benefit me now to use it on this phone? I hate to tell people too oh my number is changed. But I guess I need to read more about it what all it does. But I don't know if I need it or not.

well lets see, first it allows for visual voice mail for those who dont have it, as in it takes you voice main and text's you a transcript of your voicemail. it also allows you to use one phone number for all you diff phones, as in they call your number and your home phone AND cell phone rings. It also lets you set digg voice greeting for diff groups of people, like you can have one for family (to let them know info when they call) one for friends, one for biz contacts, and one for unknown and/or blocked callid numbers. there are many more things as well, but thats just a few of the cool things that i use

Thanks, I knew it could make your home phone ring too and that it would use your Google #'s VM. I didn't know you could have different ones for different people though. I probably don't need it not sure. I just got a program called You Mail which there isn't a Win MO out yet but my friends BB has it. So I don't get the full effect of Visual Voicemail but it's really cool. I can listen to messages online or from phone's web browser and I get an email when I have a missed call or VM. And mine states the persons contact name and says hi to them and that Rose can't come to the phone and there's lots of other funny greetings too. It's Cute! People get a kick out of it saying there name 1st LOL! So now my VN goes to you mails and not Sprints. But I do know that the EVO will have Visual VM as well. But if the program I am using has an Android version I may keep using it. And my You Mail will do voice transcription but it's extra.
 
Is it just me or has Appbrain been having trouble recently? I keep getting '500 server error' and pages will not load. Is this happening to anyone else?

What would be the best alternative to appbrain?

Maybe? Not all apps are posted though.

EDIT: There is one site which has just about 90% of all android apps posted but it gives you direct download access to apk files which this site might consider as warez, so you'll have to look for that one yourself.
 
Wow that's great I already have 3 sites bookmarked for apps and other app sites bookmarked. I had a program on my touch pro 2 called Clean Ram and it freed up memory. Is there something like that I'll need on the Android? And what do you guys use to back up your phone? Windows Mobile 6.5 came with Microsoft Backup and I never tried it. I used Dashwire once.
 
Great thread. I started my AppBrain install list awhile ago and have been working on it.

One app I need a suggestion for: A dictionary.
The one on my Pre suggests words as I type and corrects mispellings.
Useful for when I'm trying to look smarter than I am in texts and forum posts (:
