Help OTA update Issues/troubleshooting

For some strange reason Google decided to set the default USB setting to "charge only" in 6. Plug in your phone and then pull down the notification window, you should see "Touch for USB options" and there you select transfer files.

now that is just about the dumbest decision Google ever made (almost)

Hello, I have nexus 6,my device is running 5.1.1. I bought it from The USA. When I check for update, it's writing that YOUR SYSTEM IS UP TO DATE. I reset it several times but still doesn't give any new update. I do not want to update my device manual. Is anyone face with that problem? Is anyone can help me to solve this?

The updates are still rolling out (not all are pushed out on the same day).
I see you indicated you don't want to update the OS manually - if so, you will have to wait till they push it to your device.

If you decide to update the OS manually, you can do so by ADB Sideload (your data will not be wiped), or by flashing the factory images (Unlocked bootloader is needed to flash factory images - if your bootloader is currently locked, unlocking it will wipe data)

...by flashing the factory images (Unlocked bootloader is needed to flash factory images - if your bootloader is currently locked, unlocking it will wipe data)

After having flashed the factory image several times now (a few devices), I firmly believe it is the best way to go. My phone just seems to work "better." I know it's quite subjective; however, when the next update comes out, I will definitely flash the factory image again.

A retail boxed BestBuy unlocked Nexus 6 - where would this fall in line for updates? Still tied to current carrier?

I was under the assumption updates, would come straight from Google and first - but none yet OTA.

Currently at 5.1.1 - all stock

No Nexus 6 is tied to a carrier beyond the little brand emblem or the payment plan. Updates do come from Google but on a tiered rollout. It could take several weeks for your turn to come around and if you decline it the first time, it could take several more weeks to get the option again. Flashing is faster. :)

My phone is 1 week old out of the box, and received Build LYZ28N OTA.
Most sites list this one as , T-Mobile specific.

I have accepted all of the OTA updates so far. It has the latest Nov security patch.

I'm thinking what you told me, isn't correct,

A Nexus 6 IS tied directly to Tmobile updates.....

***T-Mobile Nexus 6 Android 6.0 update approved, expected to start arriving ‘soon’

http://www.tmonews.com/2015/11/t-mo...ate-approved-expected-to-start-arriving-soon/

If Tmobile had to approve it, it didnt come straight from Google (in my case)

... because T-Mo’s Nexus 6 needs a special build for Wi-Fi calling and band 12, any T-Mobile customers using a Nexus 6 can’t just flash the builds on Google’s Nexus factory image site.

That's a little disingenuous on their part. You certainly can flash a factory image but you won't be able to use wifi-calling with the International GSM image. I'm sure that the T-Mobile variant will show up on the factory image site before everyone gets the OTA.

That quote about T-Mo N6 needed a special build for Wi-Fi calling and B12 is not really accurate.
I had flashed MRA58K, and have been able to use Wi-Fi calling (and in-flight free SMS using GoGo) on my N6 (T-Mo SIM of course). And my phone happily connects to Band 12 whenever available (verified using SignalCheck app)

Having said that, I will flash the MRA58X whenever the factory image is available :)

Edit: interestingly, see https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-18109
MRA58K Your software is up to date. There are no updates available.
So, MRA58K was approved for T-Mo use?

You have to understand that your information is coming from T-Mobile. It is in their best interest to keep their existing customers dependent on them, but while they have a specific build for t-Mobile features (although, as far as I know the ONLY non-stock feature is Wi-Fi calling, so I'm not sure how this would impact an N7) the OTA's come from Google. Of course, Google might have an agreement with the carriers not to push out updates until they have had a chance to review them (and submit their specific builds) for the carrier branded devices.

The GNex from Verizon was the ONLY Nexus device that had carrier provided updates ... and that turned into a nightmare. Google said never again after that.

If you look at your original link, you'll see that all Android Police did was pick up the T-mobile press release. Such is the nature of "news" on the internet. *sigh*

There is no reason why you can't grab Google image from the Nexus Developer site and flash it to your phone.

But it does seem, if you are on Tmobile with a Nexus, they control your updates, not Google.

Okay, it's semantics. They may control when you get the update, but it won't come from T-Mobile. The first part is just a guess, but the second I'm pretty sure about.

Show me the path, from this Tmobile build, they sent OTA - LYZ28N Nov. Security update
To Marshmallow (any version)

That's my prob. Tmobile is controlling the updates, NOT Google like everyone says.

My first question is how much of an issue is it for you to have Wifi Calling or VoLTE? Depending on your area these may not work, or work reliably with a pure Google factory image. Second question is, if and when they finalize the T-Mobile version, do you want to have to reflash your whole phone? You won't get an OTA to switch versions.

Interesting article about VoLTE.

The connections to T-Mobile's wifi network and VoLTE implementation are proprietary bits that has to be implemented in the radio, not the rom so T-Mobile does indeed control that portion of it.

So ... if you don't use WiFi calling and aren't in a VoLTE/Band 12 area, then flash MRA58K and you'll have 6.0.

Hi,
I have been facing strange issue after updating to Android 6.0.1, all images are getting saved upside down (180° rotation) and also some games are rotating the screen by 180°

are you rooted?

what app are you using to open these files?

have you tried different apps to open up the files to see if the images are oriented properly?

what carrier?

if you take a new photo, does it have the same issue?

do videos or anything else act strange?

Hey,

I've had a Nexus 6 in the UK since May 2015 and all the updates since then, upto 6.1, have been fine. I had to get my handset replaced just after New Year.

It comes shipped with 5.0 so it obviously prompts to update to 5.1. I did this, which failed and the phone was bricked. Took it back to the shop, who replaced it again as they couldn't do anything with it. Got the new one, same process, same result. 5.1 update failed and bricked it.

So I'm on my 3rd brand new Nexus 6 in 10 days and am now reluctant to update it, which is stupid. Updates are there for a reason.

I've done the update straight after initial boot up - no apps were installed to have caused some incompatibility.

I'm not after any help as such, other than to ask if there is a known issue with the current 5.1 update Google are sending out?

Thanks

Need some more information. When you say it got bricked, what exactly happened? Did it go into a bootloop? or was the screen not powering on? Or was it stuck at optimizing apps?
What build was your previous device at? And what build is your current device at? Are you sure that the devices that they gave you are not rooted? Was the bootloader unlocked? (since they are replacing your device, I suspect it may not be with a new Nexus 6 - they may be giving you a refurbished device.

The OTA works - no reason it should cause your device to brick, unless your device is not fully stock. If there are any system modifications (not user apps/files), then the OTA will fail - but it will not result in a bricked phone.

One option - go back to the store, and have them update it. That way, if there is a problem, they will address it.

There's no way I believe an official store would get provided with 3 rooted phones! They're not refurbished either - come in all the proper packaging with all accessories. Normally they are a refurb phone, but they didn't have any in stock so my insurance company gave me a voucher to the value of the phone - all 3 have been brand new devices.

When doing the 5.1 update, it fails then reboots then does something with the apps (can't remember if it says optimizing or something else), then seems to finish and you get the animated android logo appear, then it reboots and repeats this over and over.

My previous phone was at the latest build available for the Nexus 6. The current phone us 5.0 LRX210. I took the update failed ones to the store, they plugged in and couldn't do anything with it.
