Traditional Marketing or Online Marketing? Which is Better?

Hi, I just want to know your opinion here. I want to understand my sister's point of view about using a traditional marketing compared to social media marketing these days. I said, both are useful in terms of leveraging one's business. However, am I correct telling her that an online marketing is much better to build a thriving and profitable audience for a site? I have been here on the internet searching to defend myself. She's really insisting with her traditional ways. By the way, to end this debate of ours, Would you mind sharing to me your specific experiences about dealing with social media marketing? Which Do you prefer? Traditional Marketing or Online Marketing? Thanks for sharing in advance!
 
What would you be marketing? What's the product or service you're trying to sell?
Todays marketing is a mix of means for promotion, offline and online. Why not use best of both worlds?
Traditional marketing focuses on price, location, staff, packaging, the product itself.
Traditional means include paper ads, brochures, posters, giveaways, radio and tv commercials, even cinema commercials.
'New' online marketing includes a dedicated website, a Facebook page, Twitter account, Whatsapp, Instagram...
It's all long merged into one new marketing world by now.

You say "to build a thriving and profitable audience for a site", so I guess it is a website she is trying to market. In that case I'd certainly include online, since you can go straight from the ad to the site.

Personally as an end user I'd say the main thing is not to annoy people with the advertising, no matter what form it takes.
 
Who is she trying to reach?

If you're trying to sell mobility scooters for the elderly, social media might not be your best bet.

And if it's multi-level marketing, the best thing to do is to walk away from it entirely while you still have friends. :p

The best answer is "all of the above".

You need to have a product conducive to the venue and able to reach the target at an equitable price. You don't have to be the cheapest to thrive. As a matter of fact the opposite is usually truer. You also have to build a customer base and provide them with RELEVANT information rather than just taking the shotgun approach and hope you hit.

Now, if the question is if social media campaigns are more effective for online businesses, then the answer is a definitive ... it depends. ;)

While I agree in theory with you @Kaat72 , the problem is if they do all of those things, then there is no time to actually run the business, make the product, serve cappuccino to millenials, etc. ;)

answer: it all depends.. on a lot of things.

but mainly: what is your product? & what is your target market? & what is your budget?
 
Thanks for your input. She sells bags and accessories online.
But I think she finally saw the light because she recently asked me to find a good internet marketing webinar and I was thinking of this one.

If she makes the articles, Etsy has legitimate stores. A lot of crafters, buyers and sellers use it.

They have info on how to sell. Some vendors have started there, had quite a few followers, then started their own sites.
 
I've audited a few online market courses in an attempt to keep current and they seem to fall into two categories ... those that stress SEO and internet marketing exclusively and those that are more general marketing overviews, which could apply to any form of promotion. If she has no background at all, then i'd probably suggest looking for something more general. The online SEO courses tend to be overly optimistic.

Just remember that online/social media marking is just one component of an overall business plan. It won't be a miraculous tool that skyrockets the business to the top. While there are some rare instances where a business will take off and be very successful from the beginning, for every one of those there are 200 who struggle until they show a profit ... and 1,000 that fail due to unrealistic expectations. Just remember what Thomas Edison said ... being an overnight success is easy, all it takes is 10 years of hard work. :)
