Dialer and messenger ?

I am on project Fi and have been using hangouts because I like the idea of have my dialer and messenger all in one. I read a rumor that hangouts is going to change and losing sms or something of that nature I don't quite understand myself.
The last google i/o they used what'sapp in their demonstrate I personally haven't used it

Seems the capabilities will still be there for Fi users, based on how I read it?
