Newb Question: When Rooted, Do New Apps Work on Old Phones?

TheKrempist

Say I have a very old phone that can run todays apps like a Samsung Stratosphere, can I get new programs to work, like Snapchat, if I root it and update the firmware?

I cannot download certain apps now, but wonder if I can with a root?

Thank you for helping out a newbie beginner.

Generally when a developer is releasing an app, they will specify a range of what versions of Android the app will be able to run in. If your phone is still running 4.0.x for example and the stated minimum for that app is 4.4.x, whether your phone is rooted or not the app most likely won't work (or it might but not be fully functional). Rooting your phone is roughly equivalent to a computer when you change an existing user account from limited privileges to administrative privileges. Rooting itself won't allow you to run newer apps on older versions of Android, but rooting AND upgrading the ROM to a newer version Android will make a difference. Just keep in mind that really old phones may or may not have really updated ROMs available, depends on the brand/model.
