Lock screen time out

When the side button is pressed and the lock screen comes on, you only have a few seconds to swipe before the screen switches off again and you have to press the button again. Is there a way to lengthen the time the lock screen stays alight? I've searched everywhere and can't find it in Settings. Many thanks in advance.

There's a problem with the front facing sensor. The phone is designed to keep the screen off if in a purse or pocket. For this end, the front facing sensor is used. The notification, or an errant press may light up the phone screen, but the sensor detects it as in a pocket or purse, hence the screen is turned off immediately. I just tested on my S7 Edge. If I cover the sensor on top and press the unlock button, the lockscreen only lights up for one second before turning off again, similar to the OP's case. If however it is uncovered, then the screen lights up for about 15 secs (same as my normal timeout when using phone) before turning off.

There case on the phone may be ill-fitting, or you placed a low quality screen protector that reflects the sensors back instead of letting it through, making it think it is covered, or the sensor may be damaged.

If your device doesn't have a separate setting for lockscreen time-out,this app may be of assistance:

Edit:
If you're using a power-saving mode, that may interfere w/the abovementioned app,IDK,but that may also be why the lockscreen turns off after a few seconds.
I'm getting about five seconds on my Note4 lockscreen before it goes dark, even though I have display set for two minutes.Too bad there's (apparently) not a built-in separate timer for each.

OK, thanks for the advice. I don't use a power-saving mode and I'll certainly give the app a try. Thanks both of you very much.

Personally I'd be looking at possible sensor problems rather than look at an app. Since it's new I'd consider a factory reset first. If it still behaves that way I'd be off to the shop where I got it in a jiffy, and ask it to be tested, and likely replaced.

Thanks for that. I think I'll live with it. It's a minor issue and the app didn't help. Everyone's input has been invaluable. Thanks again.

I too could not find a way to extend the Lock Screen show time beyond about 3 secs - too quick to read some of the notifications that might be showing . However, I did discover a mitigating work-around. If you remove the right on-screen shortcut button (by default 'Camera') then you can rest your finger in the bottom-right corner of the Lock Screen (where the Camera button used to be) and this will hold the screen open until after you remove your finger. You have to put your finger on the imaginary button - anywhere else on the screen keeps it open, but hides the notifications!
I guess a left handed person could do something similar with the left button instead.

It's easy to find instructions on-line to remove the shortcut button (using Settings), and you can still access the camera quickly with a double click/tap on the centre bottom button that you normally use to to go to your Home screen.
(Mine's an 'S7 Active').
