Basic newby question: is 'rooting' and installing 'custom rom' phone specific? If it is (and from what I have read, I think it is) what 'custom rom' and 'rooting app' can you recommend for a "ZTE V5 (v993w)"? I have been using linux mint for the past 6 months so I'm getting more familiar with linux file system, terminology and use of terminal, but if the rooting apps only work with windows, I have also xp pro and 7 pro. Thanks

Ok so custom roms are phone specific - what about the second part of my question - what rooting app will work on my phone and are there any custom rom that will install on my phone? like Cyanogen, or Paranoid? Thanks for your sugestions

Before you do go off on the rooting trail though there are a few things you should know.
Rooting isn't essential for android devices.. in fact there are some downsides, particularly if you're a new user. Personally I think that unless there's a specific reason why you want to do it, then you probably don't need to.
There is a chunk of reading you should do.. especially if you're going to hang out at xda. Make sure you read and understand the instructions BEFORE you start doing anything.
And there is a risk involved in doing this (which increased if you don't read and understand the instructions). If you can't afford to be without your phone while you're trying to fix it (if that is even possible) then this is probably the wrong time to do it.

I did post a question on the ZTE forum with regards to rooting my phone and adding a custom rom. I could probably get most the additional functions I want with add-on apps, but I can easily access the root of a linux system (sudo 'command' + password) so why is it so hard with Android?? I do have a second old trusty phone (Samsung GT-B2710 not a smartphone, but battery last a week!), so if this phone is out of commission for a week or 2 no problem, If I 'brick it' it was a cheap phone and could live with that.
My phone is dual sim, but the first sim is G3 and the second G2? G2 is in the process of been phased out and will be useless by the end of the year (I live in Australia). If the phone is rooted, would it be possible to add G4 support to one sim and G3 to the second? or would that need a 'Hardware' upgrade??
