Need an app to listen to Kansas City Royals Baseball

my best buddy is an OTR truck driver.

His work schedule is from 8 AM Sunday morning until he makes it back home late Friday or sometime Saturday. All depends on how his dispatchers load him up.

His favorite team is the KC Royals, and he wants to listen to their games. He has Sirrus Radio in the truck but when he drives out of his 'home service area', he can't hear the game. And when it is a Home Game, they won't broadcast it locally via Sirrus XM... argh!!!:mad:

He has called in and they tell him to listen to channel xyz

his big question about that is:
Will this result in a Huge DATA usage? o_O

He is very frugal and only has a 2 gB/month plan.... :rolleyes:

all he does with his Galaxy S5 is text, make calls, and take pictures.
It does not have any downloaded apps on it at all....
if it did not come with the phone, he don't want it cluttering things up.

Any of you listen to the Major League Ball Games on your phone? Does this result in a severe hit on your data plan?

I have the MLB app, I mostly just use it to check scores/standings/game times though. I've never actually listened to a game, I watch them on my Roku. There is a game starting soon, I'll disconnect from wifi and let 'er rip. It's a Yankees game, I hate the Yankees but will play along. lol.

I did look around on the Google, the answers seem to be all over the place.

edit: I just couldn't do the Yankees. hahaha. Opted for Twins/Jays. I'll report back in a few hours...

Is there a local radio station in KC that broadcasts the games? If so do they have an app to stream their station? There are some apps that can stream many stations. Check if it says how much data it uses.

If it uses 64kbps that's 0.48MB a minute, or 28.8MB per hour. 86MB a game.

128kbps is 0.96MB a minute, 57.6MB per hour, or about 172MB per game.

Or you can test one game like Clementine_3 to check the data usage. :)
 
An hour in, my MLB starting point was 850kb and is now at 73mb. Pretty good game too.

Well, I had to shut it off before the end of the game. 90 minutes was right at 100mb though. What occurs to me is that the app could have also been doing other stuff too, it's set to update scores etc. I didn't think to turn that off as I forgot it was doing that. So, it's entirely possible that if everything was shut off except the audio feed it would be much lower.

So, perhaps an experiment gone awry in the end anyway :D

Hmmm. I just went to turn the updates off and can't. The only scoreboard choices are 15 & 30 second or a minute. So that will add up.

Look around for a specific team app or maybe something like Tunein radio? The MLB app doesn't seem to be a solution really, unless I missed something buried in there...

he can read it over tonight after he shuts the truck down for the night.
