pop-ups saying my phone is infected

hey guys need some help here

I keep getting pop-ups saying my phone is infected with a virus and to download or click something. obviously I know they are spam and spyware but the fact that im getting these messages on very safe websites (photo bucket, WebMD, etc...) makes me think that my phone does have a virus.

what's my best solution to this? is there a way to reformat my phone to delete the virus but not all my other stuff? phone noob here so please excuse the noobmess

thanks

The problem is that while the site may be 'safe', the ads on the site are not always controlled by the site owners. I've seen these popups on xda-developers website too - pretty well known among Android users that want to customize their devices.

I'll second what @BandOfBrothers suggested. No apparent need to format your phone (formatting, aka factory resetting will wipe your data from the phone - no easy way around it)

Not sure I'd count Photobucket as a really safe site though... I use it but its so full of ads its virtually unusable.

If you DO have an infected file or app, Avast will scan your system and find it for you. If your device is clean, Avast will also let you know that as well.
