Looking for music player that remembers "now playing" when USB unplugged

I've got a Moto X, which doesn't have a memory card slot, so I'm stuck with the 16G it comes with. To make room for apps, photos, etc., I need to use USB OTG to hold my songs. Also, I have a limited enough data plan that I don't want to use the cloud for music storage.

My problem is that when I'm playing a playlist and it's time to stop, I unplug the USB, and then the music player "forgets" where I was in the playlist, making it a pain to continue when it's time to start up again. I've used a few players, Jet Audio, Google's Play Music, ..., and I can't find a way to pick up where I left off. I tried things like exiting the music app (on the ones that allow exiting), unmounting the USB, and every other way I can think of to "gracefully" unplug the USB and then plug the device back in. But when the USB goes away, so does my Now Playing list. The player can find the songs on the USB just fine. It just seems that something in the background, when the player is off, senses that the files disappeared and then stopped whatever background task was going on.

Has anyone found a player that remembers the playlist position during USB unplug/re-plug?

Basically, I only listen to music in the car, so I'm unplugging to carry the phone around the rest of the time. Having the USB "dongle" in the car isn't a problem. But even though it's a pretty small dongle, it won't fit in my holster and I don't think it's sturdy enough to survive in my pocket.

And another reason for unplugging - I don't believe you can charge a phone and have USB OTG plugged in. From what I read, charging and being the USB master are mutually exclusive. There are USB OTG cables that allow you to plug into a charger, but that's only to power the USB slave device and save on the phone battery.

The thing is - I can't charge the phone at the same time I have the USB memory plugged in. So I have to unplug the USB OTG to charge. And that will cause the music player to forget the position in the playlist.

These 3 items are all you need. The USB stick, with your music on it, plugs into your USB port in the vehicle. The USB 12 volt adapter, along with the USB cord will plug into your phone, charging it. Your car stereo will play your music directly from the stick, no USB OTG required....

That's newer cars. I had to install a player with a USB port in my 1996 Tacoma.

I mistook that USB port in the Acura as one that would charge. We bought the adapter for the cigarette lighter.

OK, I see what you're getting at. Short answer - No, my car doesn't have a USB port.

My car, a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan, teases me with a USB port hidden in the glove box. I had forgotten about that until you just mentioned it. But it's a tease because it doesn't connect to my radio. The radio has Bluetooth, which is great, and why I want to use my phone. But some manuals say I can play USB media through that hidden port and others don't mention it at all. However, I've tried it and not only does the radio not connect to it, it won't even charge my phone.

Maybe my only option is to go back to the 20th century and burn my songs onto CDs. So close, though. It seems almost all the pieces are there. I'll first try some more players. There are tons of them, so maybe I'll get lucky.
