What's a Good Alternative to Skype (Minus the Video Part)?

I rarely ever use Skype for video chat or calling ppl... I only use it as an instant messaging app. Since it's a fairly huge app and uses quite a bit of storage space and battery, I was wondering if you could suggest a good alternative that has similar features (instant messaging, some cool emojis, etc.) but without the video feature. And something lighter on space and battery.

I think I checked into Whatsapp and if I recall correctly you need a phone number to get a Whatsapp account? I just want to use it on my Samsung Galaxy tablet... It's not a phone.

you're right, whatsapp does tie itself to a phone number, so we can rule that one out....

Besides Hangouts? Lol I know I'm being picky but I already have a Gmail account and I don't want to use that account or mix accounts for chatting with friends. I guess what I'm trying to say is I want a stand-alone app not linked to my existing account.
