Help Echo when I speak

markdoc

Android Expert
I occasionally get an echo when I speak during a phone call. I have owned 5 HTC models and the "10" is the first one with this problem. This is the second "10" I've used and both have the
Echo. It's really annoying to me but the people I talk to can't hear it. I've tried different cases, held and not held the phone, with and w/o earphones, nothing helps. Does anyone know how to stop it. It is driving me crazy. Please help! :thumbsdowndroid:

It can be a few different issues. First and foremost- Does it occur in the same service area? Occasionally there can be tower issues that can mess up sidetone when the delay exceeds 10ms. A lot of people don't even realize sidetone exists, and just how necessary it is for our brains to realize we are talking at the correct volume.

does it occur when placing calls to certain people or landlines? I would keep track of when you experience the issue so you can better isolate the cause. The fact that it is happening on 2 different phones points away from it being a phone issue.

Thanks for helping. I agree that I don't think it's a phone issue. It definitely isn't consistent with specific phones. It also has happened with cell phones and landline calls. It doesn't occurr 100% of the time with any person or phone type
I mainly use the phone from one location (my home). Due to the structure, I'm usually at 2 bars, maybe 3. So the signal isn't the strongest. Also, as I'm writing this, I remembered that this is the only phone I've had that has Wifi calling. Could that be the cause? I'm going to turn that off and see. What do you think?

I've occasionally had that with different phones over the years. In my case it's been intermittent, occurred in particular locations, and been temporary (never more than a couple of weeks), so I've put it down to a network issue.

WiFi calling has been well known for causing echo.
I just confirmed that you were right. The Nougat update changed the phone call window and it now states that its a WiFi call. As soon as I heard an echo, my phone said "WiFi". No echo, no "WiFi". Thanks for your help. I just turned off Wifi.

FYI
I wound up still getting an echo using 4G lte. It was when I had 1 line or maybe 2 lines of phone signal at my home. I purchased a 4G lte network extender. I went from 1 to 2 lines to constant 5 lines and every call is perfect.

Last update: I again got echos even with 5 lines so I called Verizon. I really wasn't expecting much but I was desperate. I got lucky and the tech was great. He said to try two things. First, turn off HD Calling. He said that HD tries to push the calls on the data network and the Network Enhancer pushes the lte network. Since they're fighting each other that could cause an echo. If that doesn't work, turn down the call volume one notch. I had it on the highest setting. He said that the microphone can be so sensitive that it can cause an echo. I apologize for the explanations not being exact, my memory fails me. What I can say is when I get the echo, I lower my call volume one notch and the echo stops.

I know this was an old post but I finally found a solution that is working. Under "Settings" - "Call" there are two settings; "Hearing Aid" then "Sidetone". Checking "Hearing Aid" ungreys "Sidetone" so it can be checked. Checking both worked the best. My calls were crystal clear. However, I had the worse echo when talking to my niece's IPhone. Checking "Sidetone" caused me to sound distant to my niece. Unchecking it solved that issue while retaining the loss of echo. I hope this helps others with my past problem.
