S7 Edge extremely slow

rtuite

Newbie
I got my AT&T s7 Edge shortly after it was released (when they were running the free Gear VR promo), and lately it's been running dog slow. It takes 3-5 seconds to open mundane apps like Gmail or the messaging app, and even keystrokes when typing have a noticeable delay.

Admittedly, I likely had WAY too many apps installed. I uninstalled a bunch, disabled background usage for many others, and it was still laggy and annoying. Fed up, I finally did a factory wipe and reset without restoring. Afterward, I only reinstalled a few basic apps like my banking apps and Discord (I'm an admin for multiple game servers so I need to be available for my players.)

It is STILL running terribly. I also have an iPhone 7 for work, and I've started using it more regularly than my Android because I don't have to argue with it/fight with it.

I really started noticing the performance problems when I hit 7.0, and it's got successively worse with each forced "Carrier settings update." One of my friends who also has an s7 edge (on Sprint) noticed the same thing, and we're pretty annoyed that an $800 device is performing so poorly.

Any suggestions? Or am I at the mercy of AT&T?

the performance problems when I hit 7.0,

Hmmm, perhaps something went awry with the update to 7.0. If that's the case a factory reset wouldn't fix it. I agree with @James L that flashing the stock firmware (for 7) would be a good idea. If it continues to perform poorly, then I'd think it was a hardware issue.

My wife has an S7 Edge from AT&T running 7.0 and it runs fine.

I don't know if this is going to help your phone model, for I run a Coolpad 3300A and Android ver. 4.4.4. I had found junk in memory by using a cleaner, found the memory was better than 3/4 full using a booster, all before I discovered the real fix.

Every time you run an app and go to another, the first app is still running, taking up resources. I heard of a "recent apps" menu, but had no idea how to bring it up.

Bottom of my phone has 3 buttons below the display screen, from left to right: Menu, Home, and Back a page. Long Hold on the Menu causes a bunch of apps to appear on my screen as thumbnails. This is the recent apps menu.

Swiping left or right on each app releases memory as the app is closed. Swiping the last app displays a message about there are no recent apps here. Using the boost app showed I was only using 50% of memory, the lowest I ever saw it.

My phone is FAST again.
