Adoptable storage

The unlocked HTC 10 is the only smartphone I've heard of which let you use adoptable storage. LG and Samsung disabled it from their releases when it came out last year. I think their reasoning was that people like to switch Micro SD cards from time to time but once you enable adoptable storage you cant just switch cards without reformatting the card and factory resetting your phone.

The may also have been thinking that even a fast sd is slower, and not everyone will use the fastest cards (remember that people who research this stuff are a minority), so they didn't want to get a reputation for making slow phones when it was actually the cards being used this way that was slowing them down. I'm only speculating, but it seems plausible.

Add increased sd wear (and I know from experience that sd cards can suddenly fail) and I personally have no interest in adoptable storage.

That's true too Hadron. If you didn't read the fine print you could easily make the mistake of purchasing something other than a class 10 microSD card because it's cheaper not realizing that the write speed is very important when using adoptable storage.

The big reason for me not worrying about the demise of adoptable storage is that it just wasn't that different from using external storage.

My HTC 10 purchased from sprint allowed me to do it. My first 10 it worked flawlessly. I had a u3 card. I bought a new 10 a few months ago and it had a few issues. I was just curious but truth be known with a 128 gig internal storage adoptable storage is not real necessary.

Thanks. The v30 plus should arrive tomorrow.

Yes, the V30 sdcard CAN be used as adoptable storage! When you go to format the card you have a choice to be adoptable or portable. Just keep in mind that making it adoptable will encrypt the card, thus it can not be used in other devices until it is formatted back as portable.

I only suggest that you do this if you use a VERY fast SDCard. The only one that I would recommend is the Sandisk 400GB microsd card. It has the fastest rating at over 100MB/s.
