Can I root s6 g920a nougat if it's unlocked or downgraded?

I have an s6 g920a from AT&T. Its on 7.0 nougat. I'm in the middle of switching it from AT&T to safelink (Trac phone). This requires an unlock code from AT&T which is pending for approval now. I do not know if this unlock code unlocks the bootloader? I REALLY want to root this phone. If I have to downgrade to marshmallow or something else I'm totally fine with that. I just need help rooting this thing it seems impossible. I am not tech savvy so bear that in mind please. Please help me downgrade so I can root it. Either that or any other ways to root it would be EXTREMELY helpful. I've never had the pleasure of having a rooted phone my email is thatavailabilitythough@gmail.com

The sim is unlocked not the bootloader. The bootloader remains locked even with root.
