music playback on a galaxy j3

Go into your file manager, in it's settings select 'show hidden files' then search for a file called .nomedia if you find such a file leading up to the file with ur music, make sure to delete it, and then see if the music shows up
I have a file manager now, opened hidden file but .nomedia is there

A .nomedia folder is there to tell your phone that the media in that folder shouldn't show up in your music player, so if you have such a file, you should delete it, then the music should show up in your player.

If after deleting the file, the music still didn't appear then change the name of the folder they're in, that way it's going to refresh it. And if after all that the music doesn't appear, then restart your phone.

If that doesn't help, try an app that scans for media in your sd card and let's your gallery know of any files.

Here's an app that does that. I never used it, so i can't comment on it's performance.

Note that Android file management still relies on a confusing misnomer. The internal storage is tagged as 'SD Card' and a microSD card as 'Ext SD Card', despite the internal storage in reality being a hardware chip soldered to the motherboard and not being a 'card' at all. When you're redirecting those media apps to the find your music files are you indeed looking in the correct location?
i have the file manager, it recognises my sd card, how do i direct the media player to the sd card, I've scanned it a few times with the media player and still not reading the music

-- Just to clarify, which media player app are you using?
If the app you're using doesn't allow you set it for detect files stored in specific folders, try a different one. I prefer MX Player and VLC but there a several other viable media players.

-- Also, even if you have a file manager app that can see your microSD card that doesn't necessarily mean your music library is actually stored there. Please state that you have confirmed your music files are or are not on your microSD card.
(Again, there's a distinction between SD Card and Ext SD Card)

C'mon Tim! You can do it!
Find that media player app that will scan your external SD!

@tim oleary can you tell us how you download this music? Was it in Google play music and you selected 'download to sd'? Because I'm that case the music will stay in Google play music and you won't be able to play it elsewhere

i downloaded through freemaker, from a popular tube, it then went into a file on my pc, i then downloaded directly to the sd card and inserted in my phone. the gallery app that samsung installed reades everything, all the music i have is music video from y tube

Thanks for clarifying. I don't think you can play music videos in the music player. Maybe someone will suggest an app that does that

nothing easy anymore, thats how freemaker downloaded them, samsung supports mp3 and mp4,
Hello, got it to work, I went through Samsung's installed gallery app, found my collection of music and was given the option to open it with power amp. Just have to figure out how to get the songs to play one after the other. thanks guys for the help, and the education, turning into a android junkie

Might have helped, from the beginning, if you had posted that you were looking for a video player that played more than one at a time. Its now clear how you were accessing your "music" from the gallery app.
Personally, I don't know of a video player that will support a playlist. If you're wanting music, only, I'd suggest reformatting your MP4 files into MP3 and using any good music player to play your music.

And Power amp will not support mp4, just the audio
Try using vlc video player, it has an option to play all videos without having to select each one.

Open the app, press on the menu on the top left and select directories in there find the folder with your music videos and press the play button on the bottom left. To start from a specific one, press on the three dots next to it and select 'play all'

The app should do what you are looking for.

Im fine without the video, phone stays in my pocket anyway, I still need to know how to make it play songs one after the other. The statement was just letting the community know that Power Amp doesn't support mp4, If you can recommend a good converter, I usually get my music from a well known "tube"

Both MX Player and VLC are able to handle a really wide range of media file formats, including mp4. I tentatively prefer MX Player for its expansive configuration options in its Settings menus but the free version is pretty ad-intensive so that can be an issue. VLC is ad-free and very, very capable, but not as configurable. An issue being if you like to tweak minutiae or if you just want to install an app that just 'works'.
MX Player

VLC

Either of MX Player or VLC will serve your needs but if instead you do want to convert media files to conform to the capabilities of a specific app, take a look at 'Timbre':

I only played around with it for a few hours and it does a good job but personally I find it much easier to use a computer to convert/edit media files.

Thank you, these apps are just as good? I really don't need video just the music, Y tube seems the most convieniant place to get it, The converter i have now converts to android in mp4 and power amp doesn't read the sd card still

Now I'm totally lost. When you play the music does it open as music, or video?
Can you post a few screenshots so we can get a better understanding of the situation?

To take a screenshot, hold the home button and the power button at the same time for a few sec.
You can then upload the screenshots by pressing the 'upload files' under the reply box on this website

It doesnt matter that you dont need the video. What matters is that you are using video files, hence you need a video player.

You should either convert the videos on a PC to audio only, or use VLC.
