Help Dictionary

Opabato

Lurker
Currently using the Gboard keyboard within my Samsung messaging app. If I highlight a word and then click on the dots for more options, I don't get a "dictionary"option to check the spelling of that word. Is there any way I can add this option on Android?

Coming from iOS and used this a lot, so hoping this can be turned on, or added.

Just make sure that the words in question are highlighted then long press it and wait for the options to reveal themselves.

Dear Android Police,

I am writing to you regarding the name of the island of Kastellorizo, where I live and I come from. I have also been authorized to speak on behalf of the island's municipality (Municipality of Megisti).

We have been using Android devices for years. However, I need to point out a serious mistake being done by the Android spelling checker:

Correct spelling: Kastellorizo (English), Καστελλόριζο (Greek).
Wrong spelling: Kastelorizo (English), Καστελόριζο (Greek).

My Oppo R9 Plus spelling dictionary just didn't have your island's name in it at all, not unless I add it manually to the user dictionary.

BTW this is how you spell it in Chinese "卡斯特洛里佐岛", according to Google that is.

Many thanks for the reply.

Well, the spelling mistake is more evident on the Greek language version.

And the question remains, what can be done about it? I hope there is some solution, or at least a way to know the source, so that I can contact it.

Although it is Google that makes Android as an open source OS, and issues and bugs can be reported and tracked here

But ultimately it's the individual device manufacturers that decide what they want to do, including compiling their own spelling dictionaries, auto-corrects, etc, like not including Greek at all in phones intended for China. So I think you would need to approach the manufacturers, such as Samsung, LG, Huawei, ZTE, Sony, Motorola(Lenovo), etc.
Then there's third-party app developers as well, that might be using their own dictionaries and spelling checkers, e.g. SwiftKey keyboard.
