Android Contacts acting funny

Few months ago, every now and then, when I try to call people from my contacts, my phone would end up calling someone else on my contact. The frequency of occurrence got higher and at point I thought it was Truecaller messing up my contacts and uninstalled the app. Later, I realised Truecaller isn't responsible for this cuz in spite of uninstalling the app, the issue was persistent.

So what's happened now is most of my contacts are mixed up. They have their actual number saved under their name but they also have another contact's number saved. These are not new contacts, even the old ones. In the case of some contacts, their original number isn't even associated with their name anymore. It's got someone else's number from my contact list.

Can anyone help with the situation. Even if not repair the damage, how to avoid recurrence? Please? This is extremely annoying.

I don't know whether I can help prevent recurrence because I've never heard of this before so don't know what's responsible. But when you've sorted them out it may be worth taking a backup of your own (using the export option in the contacts app's settings) so if it were to happen again you'd have an uncorrupted copy.

Are these phone only contacts or synced with Google? If they are phone only then it has to be one of the apps on your phone that has the permissions to modify contacts. If synced the corruption could occur at the server (though it's such a wierd one that I'd wonder whether someone has your password and is playing a prank - do you have 2-factor authentication enabled?). Corruption via sync could easily be tested by turning contacts syncing off for a while.

The issues you're encountering is sometimes due to multiple accounts on device having the same or simular numbers. Go into your device contacts and tick the 3 dots in the upper right corner. Look there to see all accounts on your device are synced. It's also a good idea to check your vcf.cards in your file manager. You may need to remove one or more if the cards has duplicate phone numbers in them, one in which would have the name and number and the other would have just the phone number of the contacts. When this happens your device is trying to make sense of which account you're trying to use if one has not been chosen as your device primary account.
