How do I root my phone?

Let me elaborate on my reply to @svim 's post and perhaps mirror his feelings about the Verizon variant of the Note 4 (and pretty much everything else from Verizon on newer firmware).

Achieving root sometimes is difficult and risky. Verizon locked the bootloader, and from what I understand, that means no custom recovery. Custom recovery is, in my opinion, a must have for rooted devices.
There are ways to achieve, for lack of a better term, pseudo root with other methods.

I"m stuck with Verizon myself (my device is work issued) so the last time I rooted my device was back on my LG G3 when I was on Jellybean? or was it KitKat? Not sure. But since then, it's become increasingly difficult to get root/custom recovery on a Verizon device. So I gave up.

I can only wish you the best, read very carefully any root method, back up your device before doing so and be wary of one-click root methods.

I speak only from a Verizon-device-owner point of view :D

/end of my small rant.

Correct me if I am wrong, anybody, since I've given up on rooting my Verizon devices :p

firewall, system wide ad blocker, and to block some apps from using my location information.
I would like to be able to use youtube-dl just like on linux if that is at all possible too???

Take a look at this noRoot Data Firewall app, I tend to prefer the user interface that AFWall+ uses (a root only firewall app) but this is turning out to be a good alternative for non-rooted devices:

As for adjusting Location access on individual apps, you'll need to dig deep into your Settings for the Location Permissions menu. This link gives you general instructions:

No experience with a system wide ad-blocker or Youtube downloader app so hopefully others will chime in. But I will suggest a good privacy focused browser app, Firefox Focus. By default it deletes your entire browsing session history each time you quit the app, and it has its own tracking-cookie blocker, utilizing the same listings that the Disconnect add-on uses.

Youtube downloader app <----- These are usually adware Krap

My recommendation ,
VLC for Android

system wide ad-blocker <---- If on your WiFi network this is easilly acchieved for entire network using OpenDNS and Whitlist/Blacklist options
of course it cover entire network and is done in router...
and isn't as good a solution as Xposed and a few good Modules Lol!!!
there's my 2cents

Just a reminder, using a service like OpenDNS when applied to your router as implied will only be working when using WiFi connectivity when you're at home.
You'll need to change your phone's DNS to use OpenDNS servers so it's protecting your Note while using WiFi or mobile data (cellular). A DNS changing app like this one might be helpful:
