Customization options

Hey guys, I just bought a Pixel 2 XL, moving over from IOS, but have noticed that the promise of customization options isn't as I expected, I can't hide the navigation bar, I don't have support for dual apps, can't customize the LED lights to specific apps, also is there a fix for the screen blue shift?? Would really appreciate the help! 🙄

Hi, and welcome!

The navigation bar will automatically hide in certain apps/games which make use of immersive mode. When this happens, you just need to swipe from the edge of the screen where the bar should be for it to reappear. If you'd like to be able to hide the navbar on demand, you might try checking out this thread.

What do you mean by "dual apps"? If you're talking about splitting the screen into two so that you can run two apps side by side, just press and hold the Overview (square) button.

You might try using the Light Flow app to customize LED notifications on a per-app basis.

The off-axis blue shift is an inherent property of the display panel used in the Pixel 2 XL. The "fix" is to look at your phone straight on rather than tilting it to one side or the other.

Let us know what else you'd like to customize - you'll find that Android is very much "where there's a will, there's a way" when it comes to customization.

This response in it's own makes me happy with my purchase, really good to know there is a cool community having my back! 😉 Will definitely have a lot of questions moving forward with the phone.

That's really really helpful tips guys! I am loving the phone, but I have been having issues with the Bluetooth lately I am on Oreo 8.1 but there still a problem with the Bluetooth connection, also on a different note, is there a way to re map the squeeze to lunch the camera for instance rather then it only being for GA????

Could you tell us a bit more about the Bluetooth issues? It would be helpful to know what device(s) you're using as well as what symptom(s) you're experiencing.

And no, you can't remap the Active Edge feature - though you can double-tap the Power button to quickly launch the camera.

I tried connecting them to my airpods but didn't connect, I thought it was an issue given the airpods are apples but I tried connecting a two different Bose headphones/speaker, still didn't work, music played from the phone, and phone calls, audio didn't transfer to the devices.
Do you think Google will let us remap the squeeze feature in the future??

That's interesting. I've used my Pixel 2 with a number of different Bluetooth speakers without any troubles, and I know some folks who have specifically used AirPods with Pixels as well. Have you tried going to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth to see if that helps?

No clue if Google plans to let us remap the Active Edge to another function, but you can always use Settings > System > About phone > Send feedback about this device to request it.

One more question I am not sure if I asked this before, but what's up with dual messenger on the pixel do I still need parallel app to get that feature, I remember reading somewhere that it's an Oreo standard feature but can't seem to find it here??

Having two apps of the same app, like having two what's app apps

What you're asking for is going to take some system tweaking on your part. While most SMS/MMS texting apps are tied to your phone number, creating a different situation if you do want to run two text messaging apps concurrently, with WhatsApp that ties into your device's MAC address (Media Access Control), a unique identifier based on the internal networking chip itself. You can however 'spoof' your MAC address on a temporary basis (to do so permanently requires you to root your phone). This link walks you through the process:
https://geekeasier.com/change-mac-address-in-android-devices-without-root/4792/
Just note that even when you do successfully spoof your MAC address, I have no clue if you'll be able to set up two different WhatsApp apps, having duplicate apps on the same phone will be a project itself.

I thought it was a feature in Oreo because Samsung has it on the note 8
It's not a part of Google's version of Android. Many manufacturers heavily modify the operating system as well as bundling their own apps and features, and it sounds like this is something that Samsung added to their builds.

If you'd like to see Google add it to their version of Android, please be sure to request it via Settings > System > About phone > Send feedback about this device.
