I've got an available update (it has an extremely long name and I couldn't find anything about it online) and it says the update size is 371 MB, so I'm guessing it's not Oreo, I would guess it's probably the security update. But does this slow down my tablet? Because I know upgrading from stock version isn't a good idea as it does slow down your tablet. But if it's a security update does it?

371 MB sounds about right for a security patch. It really depends on what they update, but in general security patches don't have any effect on performance.

You have a Lenovo tab?

Did you update to the security patch? And if so did it affect performance? And should I update?

I just checked the current spec'a and they are still shipping with 7.1 so I don't think Oreo is even available yet.

I don't have the same model. Mine is an older Samsung Note 10.1, but always ALWAYS keep my devices patched to the current security level. Too many bad guys out there to risk it, even if it does impact performance (which it doesn't)

I'm still concerned to update, I've learned the hard way from my other devices that updating from stock is not a good idea at all...

You're not updating from stock. A security patch is not custom firmware. It's the same as updating apps from the play store. When it's applied, it will still be the same version of Android with all the same settings, but have security holes plugged.

Also, since this is a security update, am I not protected without the update?

Isn't the security update about protecting against scareware and Spectre?

A security update is protection against known exploits, but which explots this particular update for this particular device protects against I can't say. The ChangeLog for the update should tell you what is in it, if the software updates page shows you that.

I've always applied any security update that's issued to any of my devices. But I should add that it's not my experience that stock system updates always slow devices down either.

It doesn't have a changelog. I've tried searching it, but the name is extremely long and nothing came up.

That's not your device and completely unrelated. Personally I think they are being effected by the Whatsapp app more than anything else.
