No notification sounds

Hi...I'm not getting any notification sounds for texts...I have a different one assigned to each family member and up to a few days ago it worked very well. Now I can't even find the option to assign individual sounds. It was under contacts, messaging , ringtone... I've checked and rechecked that notifications are set to ""allow" in my settings, apps screen. I checked the messaging app specifically to be sure its not blocked. This is really frustrating. I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem and what I can do about it; Thanks for any input!

We need to post a Public Service Announcement about this.

Have you had a system update? The new version of the Samsung message app that comes with it does not support individual message tones. You need to switch to a different message app if you want them back.

We don't know why Samsung have done this. I also don't know why you are getting no sound, most are just complaining that they have the same sound for everyone.

This was a problem create with the last Android update not Samsung. Very frustrating. Rumor is they are possibly going to fix it. Everyone needs to continue to complain.

Could be that the OP had only custom notification sound levels above zero and the default tone was turned off (or sent to none). If I understand what happens with the update, the phone reverts to the default tone.

No, the loss of individual notification tones is Samsung: it's just the Samsung message app that is affected, and the change came as part of the Samsung update. The fact that this update is to Oreo is coincidence, since no other manufacturer removed this option in Oreo. And if you change to a different message app you get the option back (through the app's settings), including Google's own message app.

So yes, indeed you should complain, absolutely agree. But address your complaints to Samsung, because it's them that has done it.

I am getting a sound. We just don't have the option of individual tones for different contacts.

I talked to Samsung and was told that it was an Oreo created problem and yes other manufacturers have the same issue. They suspect an update is in the air.

This is the usual comaplint about the update, but the OP @Capybopy specifically said they got NO sound. Setting the default to 'none' or having the default volume for notifications would certainly cause this. It could also be the the default tone was set to a media file that no longer exists.

I suspect Samsung is being less than forthcoming. There was also (still?) and issue with an incompatibility between their stock mail client and a recent update for Android Web View. Users couldn't reply to email on MS Exchange accounts. Samsung actually pointed the finger at Microsoft when it was an issue between them and Android (Google). I swear Samsung is becoming more like Apple every day. :(
