Note 8 Amber Alert Settings?

My Note 8 is one of the 'gray' market ones (from aisa?)
(I am in USA/OH)
SM-N950F/DS
Android 7.1.1 Stock ROM not rooted

Anyway I cannot find settings for alerts except for in message settings "Roaming emergency alerts" on or off

Anyone with one of these find the setting to turn off amber alerts?

I don't have the Note8, have a Moto G5 Plus running Nougat. But for me it's under Settings, Sound and then Emergency Broadcasts. One of the first things that I turn off. Not out of spite or lack of compassion, but between Amber Alerts and bad weather it can become very annoying...

I'm just glad it doesn't go off very often. I can live with that. If the "Blue" alerts start triggering a lot... That could be a problem.

Are "blue" alerts a real thing? I know there are Law Enforcement Officers (LEO's) participating here. I just heard about them yesterday.

I don't think I've seen AMBER message settings in any Chinese and Asia version phones, so I guess it's not implemented in a dual-SIM Note8 that was meant for sale and use in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. AMBER is a US only thing AFAIK. That might be what the "Roaming emergency alerts" setting is about, for if it's roaming in the US?

I can't recall seeing anything about AMBER in a Chinese version Note7 I had, and there's nothing in the manual about AMBER. And it's not in my current Oppo R9 Plus either.

I'm pretty sure the carriers can send out emergency messages in China, like for outbreak of nuclear war, but not notices of missing children, etc.

Thanks (again) mikedt!

I turned off that and will see as time goes by if that did it!

I also have a gray market Note8 (I live in GA) and got an Amber alert yesterday. There doesn't seem to have an emergency messages option to change.

Is it a dual-SIM Asia variant Note8? Although it receives and shows AMBER message alerts, they likely omitted the specific settings to disable it as AMBER and other US emergency alerts are not used in places like Hong Kong, etc. AFAIK. Does your Note8 have anything about "Roaming emergency alerts" in its settings?

BTW since I posted previously about my Oppo R9 and Samsung Note7, I've now got a Huawei Mate 10 dual-SIM, and that has nothing about AMBER in it either.

Chances are its there because its cheaper to include the chip, but because the intended destination is not the US the setting has been hidden. I used to know an app that would allow you to find hidden settings. Maybe someone remembers what it is. Something like my shortcut maker or something like that.

We used Quick Shortcut Maker on the Note7 to install Samsung Cloud (which was on the phone, but VERIZON made Samsung eliminate the icon so no one would use it instead of their own ridiculous Verizon Cloud (*spit*). On the Note8, though, they got even more devious by totally blocking the Samsung Cloud install.

Mikedt - yes it is a dual sim version (model SM-N9500)
it also has the "Roaming emergency alerts" in there, but only goes on or off with no other options like my old phone would give options to turn on/off amber alerts, severe alerts but not turn off presidential alerts. And the option for such alerts to be silent.

Unforgiven - that would be nice to find. There are some localized apps that seem fixed in Hong Kong where I got mine on vacation. It would be nice to be able to use Samsung Pay here

I do believe that's the Hong Kong variant.

That's definitely US specific. And I don't think the settings for this would even be hidden, as the US and Asia versions of Note8 are effectively different devices(US is Qualcomm Snapdragon because of CDMA/EVDO support, Asia is Samsung Exynos) with specific firmware for each.

The only phone I've ever seen emergency alert settings in is my Pixel, probably because Google only want to release one software version globally (I sometimes think that Google struggle to think about the world outside of Google, never mind outside of the US). Even so there's nothing about "presidential alerts" in there (I'll resist the obvious joke about that being replaced by Twitter these days).

mikedt - yes it was purchased in Hong Kong

Trying out that QuickShortcutMaker and the menu for such alerts is https://imgur.com/a/L5jlw
Top 2 and bottom 2 speak for themselves. bit the 18 numbered alerts in the middle I have no idea

milestone - I can verify my Note8 is running on a Snapdragon 835 and not Exynos. According to cpu-Z

That's interesting, because I always thought HK variant Samsungs were Exynos, and only the mainland PRC ones Snapdragon, because of China Telecom CDMA which doesn't operate in HK.

So there's nothing about AMBER alerts on the list, but a load of Emergency alert(Chinese), including Presidential alert(English and Chinese), that can't be disabled(shaded out). I suppose that's for if the shit hits the fan, and the govt. wants everyone to know about it, rather than alerting about missing children or something, i.e. AMBER. Which isn't used in China and Asia in general AFAIK.

FWIW the only time I've seen Emergency alert settings on a phone, including AMBER was when I using CyanogenMod on an Oppo Find7. And that was a custom ROM from the US.
