NOTE 8 PROBLEMS

Observations of my friends NOTE 8.
1. Goes dead intermittently during conversations.
2. BIXBY interrupts without being prompted even when it's not being held.
The phone was returned and the Verizon customer continues to use her NOTE 5.....it also has problems, but is paid for!!!

does the phone have oreo update?
was it bought new?
is it unlocked or purchased from verizon?

what troubleshooting steps have you or the other taken to try to correct the issue?

so, if the phone was returned, why try to diagnose the issue ?

Hi, Bernie! Welcome to Android Forums!

Reading your symptoms, I immediately suspect one of two things causing the problems:

(a) There is an errant 3rd party app that is interfering with normal operations of the device. Restart the phone in Safe Mode and see if the problems persist. If so, see...

(b) A hardware failure is causing the phone to react to certain conditions that do not, in fact, exist. A proximity sensor may have failed, or a button may be stuck.

If the problems persist in Safe Mode, with no 3rd party apps running, then the last resort before a replacement is a factory reset. That will wipe all user data, so back it up! Smart Switch can back up the entire phone to the microSD card before the reset. Set it back up (do not use the backup data or you may end up restoring the problem!) and see if the symptoms persist. If they do, it's a warranty replacement. When you get your new device, THEN you can restore the backup.

I am considering purchasing it...need to know if the problem is common.
It was purchased from Verizon.

Good
Definitely not common. I have used my Verizon Note8 since the first week of September 2017 and have had no such issues.

Good. The other problem was BIXBY'S untimely, unwanted appearances. She did not have the patience to go through steps to disarm it...she just went back to her N5.

First thing would be to make sure that any voice training Bixby had was deleted, and turn off Bixby Voice. I actually find it useful. But the intermittent dead thing is definitely indicative of a bad unit.
