Z981 can not reach system update

Yes there have been complaints about this issue for the last few weeks and the device over heating and excessive battery usage due to ZTE update server is down.
Probably going to be hearing even more howling from ZTE device owners..
For anyone who hasn't been keeping up:

...so I guess that includes the ZTE update servers.
BTW I was in the local phone market(Shandong Communications Mall) yesterday, and I noticed it was rather devoid of ZTE now.

This is exactly what is happenning to my z981: The phone now drains battery waaaay too much and overheats in the upper part of the phone.
I suppose it continuously tries to reach an update server...

These are indeed depressing news. I really like ZTE. I hope they stay in operations.
Does that mean I am effectively stuck with the phone trying to continuously reach servers that are turned off? Is there any way to turn off the update auto-check?
Maybe you could start a class action suit against the administration who have put so many in this position? 
I would suggest there's a problem in the way that ZTE implements update checks in their devices. A phone just shouldn't be continually polling OTA update servers, once every few days would be enough I think. And when phones go end of life and out of support, their update servers maybe shut-down anyway. And is not usually a problem, except there's no more updates for it.
Do ZTE phones have any sort of cloud backup and auto-syncing to a ZTE run service, that's what might be doing it?
Hopefully ZTE does have some future..

I don't think I am in a position to do any litigation. I just want my phone to work. But thanks for a suggestion.

You must be joking. ZTE is undeservedly lucky President Trump wants to help them. Their stupidity in incurring the US ban was inexcusable and irredeemable. I expect he'll pressure Beijing to patrol them better, bcuz I don't expect them to get any 3rd chance.Maybe you could start a class action suit against the administration who have put so many in this position?

Yes OTA system updates can be fully disabled in the phone's App Manager! Just tap on the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner and select "Show system" and then look for a system app called System updates and disable that sucker! Then your z981's or z982's battery drain will be back to normal.
