S5 upgrade gone wrong?

Barwood

Lurker
Hi all my first post here so I hope you can help. I have a S5 SM-G900F which was originally my sons locked to O2 in the UK the phone was upgraded on contract and O2 unlocked the phone and my son gave it to me.
All was well until my son visited and told me it would be a good idea to upgrade my phone to OREO 8.1 from Marshmallow 6.01 the upgrade went well?? but now apps won't work and other apps won't download is it possible to reset this back to original? I also notice when the phone starts it says "set warranty bit :: kernel".
Any advice would be welcome.

How did you update it? There is no official 8.1 for that phone (the current Samsung flagships are on 8.0, and that 5 year old phone won't have had official updates for some time), so I assume you are using a custom ROM. In which case knowing which ROM and exactly how you installed it would help: it may be a problem with the ROM, or it may be that you did something wrong during the install.

It should be possible to reflash the phone to stock firmware. You can find this at a site called sammobile.com - you need your full model number to ensure you get the right firmware (not just S5). I'm not a Samsung expert so probably best someone else advises on how to install.

Yes (last part of my post).

Though to be honest your son should really have backed up your original ROM before installing a custom one, so that you could simply revert in event of a problem.

It's possible that something as simple as clearing caches might fix this - we don't really know what's wrong. But I'd make sure everything is backed-up, because I don't think you'll be able to revert to 6.0 without doing a reset (with a difference of 2 major versions I'm certain that some of the system data will be incompatible).

Use odin and click on ''ap'' or ''pda''. Select the file and click start. Also shut down the phone and hold the home button volume down , and power button at the same time

There's now nothing on the phone to lose so for me setting it back to original would be prefered, I tried clearing the cache with no success, it's weird Facebook works but messenger doesn't others just won't download from Playstore it's annoying and really I think I should back up my son !! LOL.

It's not 8.1 per se: I'm using that on a Pixel and there are no app problems. It might be worth trying a reset, but he must have done that when installing the ROM in the first place (no way it would have worked at all otherwise). Otherwise it's a reflash, but as said I'm reluctant to advise on procedures as I've never reflashed a Samsung.

Depending on which custom ROM and root method used, phone probably doesn't pass Safety Net test and Play Store recognized it as modified. Most banking and messaging apps won't work and options to install from the Play Store is removed.
I have a Moto X4 that after I unlocked the bootloader, fails Safety Net and I have to install Netflix from APK download.
