Sounds like she's trying to send you messages using the iMessage format, she needs to send them as SMS/MMS. Apple doesn't allow other platforms to implement the iMessage format so while all (no matter what operating system you're using) texting apps support SMS/MMS, only Apple users rely on iMessage.
That was it.. if you have an Iphone you have to go into settings/messages.. then the 'Send as SMS' has to be turned on.. which then bypasses iMessage if the receiver doesn't have it.
Are you a former iPhone user? If you change platform and don't sign out of iMessage first this is what happens.
If that is the case there is now a tool to let you sign out without getting the iPhone back, and a quick web search should find it (sorry, don't really have time to hunt it up). It did take several years and a lawsuit to get Apple to do this though - I guess it suited them that many people assumed it was the other platform that didn't work properly and went back to them...
