Verizon messages notification question

I have a Galaxy S9 Plus. On the Verizon Messages app I used the menu in the upper left-hand corner and set my notification tone. The strange thing is whenever I get a new text in which there is no conversation to begin with I hear my tone. However, when the conversation is already there I get the default Verizon ringtone. I know I can change this by editing the notification in each conversation but it's a little annoying especially since I clean out my messages and delete everything frequently.

Does anyone know how to set the app so that the same ringtone comes through no matter who it is and whether or not the conversation has already been started? I realize I could just use the default Verizon notification and that would solve the problem but it's not the one I want to use. I'd appreciate any help because I've tried everything!

Settings --> apps --> messages --> notifications --> new messages --> sound --> select what you want to hear.
Repeat for apps --> messages --> notifications --> general notifications --> sound --> select what you want to hear.

Thanks for the info but there is no generalnnotification option setting in my app...

Maybe your flavor of Android? I'm on Oreo 8.0 and for me it is right above the 'new messages' in app notifications. I see you're using Message+. My stock Samsung app is plain old vanilla Messages.

Oh I see. I'm on Oreo too but I'm asking specifically about the Verizon Messages app. However I did notice that it saves everyone who I select the notification sound for so I guess I'll just do it that way. Thanks

Next time I'll RTFM (you did say Verizon Messaging app). That explains it. I deleted the Verizon one I think.

LOL that's okay. The only reason I use the Verizon Messages app is because for some reason my Wi-Fi calling is screwed up and won't send text messages or SMS while on Wi-Fi. Verizon messages has it built in.
