are you backing up data to a cloud?
background processes
animated wallpapers, infinity wallpapers

could be other things.. depends on what you have installed and whats running.

Yes, I have backup and sync on. On occasion I will use a Google live wallpaper. I have been using the Earth one lately.

I just went ahead and uninstalled a bunch of apps I really don't use often, and wiped the cache from Google Play Services.

Now that I've done that, I'll try a regular wallpaper and see what happens.

I basically email, text and call all day at work...as well as some streaming on Sirius and Play Music.. I don't game or anything.

Bet you that will make a huge difference. Backing up to the cloud can be intensive , especially if you have intermittent loss of connection (you’re driving , in a concrete garage, etc) and the system keeps that process up and running to finish the task. Not saying thats whats happening here, but it is not impossible.

Good tips though. Post back to se if you’ve seen a change. Ive not had that high % of android system on the note 9.

I took a few steps and the battery life is much improved today

I uninstalled the apps I rarely used. I cleared the cache from Google Play Services. I went back into Developer Options and turned the transitions back to 1 from 0.05, and also not using a live wallpaper

Not bad, I'll take it. Seems like deleting the data and clearing the cache on Google Play Services helped

I also went ahead and wiped the device partition cache and it really improved the battery life. My Android System is still running a high percentage, but you can see the battery life is much better. 19 hours on battery with 5 hours SOT, and still 21% left .
