Can't wipe system cache

My S5 is draining battery and runs very slow. I've tried to clear the system cache but the Power, Home, Volume up just does not work. I've tried it
on friend's phone and it works fine. Just doesn't work on mine. It's a Verizon phone. I've tried replacing the battery but that didn't help. I don't want to do a factory reset and there are no guarantees that would work either.

Wiping Dalvik cache doesn't help much with battery if some apps continue to draw unnecessary energy from it.

You should use an app like Accubattery, Gsam... to see what apps are the culprits. Facebook and Chrome are notorious for killing battery but there isn't much that you could do. But if you're not a big fan of Facebook app, its little brother Lite consumes only 1/10 of battery for the same amount of browsing time.

I'm really more concerned with the running slow and not being able to access the recovery screen.

Having to press 3 buttons, simultaneously, kills me. I've got big fingers and it always, ALWAYS, takes me 3 or 4 attempts for me to get to recovery.
If you're using a case, it may help to remove it too.

Tried it out of the case and in. Took the battery out for ten minutes and still won't do it.

Could something in settings be causing this issue. I'm constantly reading how to turn something or other off to save power and enhance performance.

Not likely as Recovery is a fundamental part of the firmware on your S5, it's not something the Settings menu has any direct access to. That's why you need to use those physical buttons (Volume Up, Home, and Power) to reboot your phone so it's then running in its Recovery Mode. At that point the Android operating system you typically see and use is idle, your phone is running in that text-only interface intended just for maintenance tasks.
The fact that you can't get into your Recovery indicates something could be corrupted or missing in your phone's recovery partition. Re-flashing a stock ROM will also reload a new, stock recovery but hopefully that's not necessary.
-- Try pulling your battery, leave it out for several minutes, then put it back in and see if you can boot into Recovery Mode.
-- If you always keep your S5 in a case, try getting into Recovery without it just to eliminate the possibility it's interfering with those buttons somehow.
-- This is a long shot but try booting into Recovery with your SIM and microSD cards removed.
