How to update phone to play games

I am trying to add words with friends on my phone. It tells me that I need to go to settings and update my phone to play. In fact, it says that on all games. My phone says it is up to date. What is wrong?

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Judyplus2 :D

Could you please post your current firmware details as per #1.8 of 42 Galaxy S5 models - Dummies Guide so that we can check to see if there are any stock Samsung firmware updates for your model of phone.

Thanks!

Looks like you have the TracFone/Straight Talk version of the S5. Don't believe it ever received any updates past 4.4.2
There might be custom recovery and rom available if you are willing to go that route.

Do they no longer do updates for this version or is my phone just not receiving them?
Thank you for your time

The S5, depending on model number and carrier that provides it, can be updated to 6.0.1 with stock firmware.
Straight Talk / TracFone is notorious for not providing updates. Guess that is how it keeps prices low

Jfalls63 is spot on. The S902L carrier model for Tracfone was abandoned by them after only one update to Android 4.4.2 some 3.5 years ago.

If you knew some who was competent and experienced with Android software, your phone could be rooted and a custom recovery installed and then a custom ROM for the S902L could be flashed to it such as Lineage OS thus taking it up to Android 8.1. Bear in mind that the old girl isn't getting any younger and with 2GB of RAM and an ageing CPU, you might do better in getting a newer, used, model.

Thank you both very much. I don't really need to play games on my phone anyway. Guess I'll leave it as it is until I am ready to upgrade to a new phone.

As long as your Adventurous, You might be able to Unlock the Bootloader on your SM-S902L and install a Custom Recovery for KLTE (like TWRP) as well as a Custom Firmware for KLTE (like LoneageOS).

The latest stable Android Version, regarding the Custom Firmware for the KLTE, is actually on Android 8.0 (Oreo) and the Android 9.0 (Pie) is currently being Beta Tested.

I can't state that it's a Guarantee you'll be able to unlock your Bootloader but, i do know of individuals who had accomplished this on their SM-S900L device.
