V40 hardware question

So I've been looking and don't see anything about the following items that were on my V20.

1) IR blaster - I don't see another hole in the case at the top and I don't see where there might be an emitter - so I guess this doesn't have an IR blaster. I don't know I miss it but it was handy for me - I used the remote control app and it took over for many a screen/projector remote at my office. Twas awesome twas.

2) Headphone amp - the V20 spec announced not only the quad hi-fi DAQ, but also a 32mW headphone output. Which was nearly double what other mobiles at the time had. I don't see any rating like that for the V40. Now the sound is good, but it's a bit weaker than my V20 so I guess this is missing too. Also notice they "tuned with Meridian" vs B&O. Meh - don't care too much about that. It does sound as clear and clean with my same music on card. So that's fine.
 
I haven't seen anything or any settings about an IR blaster but I'm new to LG's and the "40".
The sound is extremely loud using its speakers and very, very good using earphones but, I agree, not exceptionally loud. However, the best earphone sound I have ever heard is from an HTC 10. It wasn't due to boosting bass, or boosting anything. It had an app that allowed you to adjust the ability to hear 5 frequency levels for your left and right ear individually. Making the adjustments was like getting a hearing test. The LG V40 is close by having total volume adjustment for each ear, but I'll be forever spoiled by the HTC 10. (Sorry, I tend to get excited about the HTC 10's sound)
 
You can take the IR Blaster off your list.
The V40 doesn't have it.

I haven't monkeyed around with it, yet, but there are individual adjustments for "External Audio" in settings.

The LGv20 and as far as I know the other V series mobiles have had the gold standard when it comes to audio processing in a mobile. There is 6 band equalizer in the sound settings on the V40 also if you haven't found it yet.

But LG started putting a higher quality Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) on the circuit boards even before the android software knew how to use it properly. Not to sound too biased but of all the others I've played with nothing else every came close when using quality headphones. (grado, B&O, upper tier Sennheiser etc).

The V20 advertised the higher power output and I notice the later LG mobiles don't. Turns out they stopped advertising it because the power output did decrease with the new DAQ boards - it seems that other companies (motorola) wanted to start using them too and the maker of the DAC chip noticed that nobody else wanted to have the power draw of the higher performance amp - so they backed it down a bit.

So the V35 and V40 have a little less headphone jack output than their predecessor. However - the clarity is still there. I'm perfectly ok with this.

It seems there isn't a desire or need for the higher output and yes it would require some extra battery use. So I can see why it was dropped down a bit. There were concerns when the V20 came out.
 
2 days in and I already miss the IR blaster. I don't know of anyone else that has one either though. shame.

I agree with everything you said. The LG V40 has excellent sound. But I have never been a fan of preset choices in equalizers. I don't want to listen to the way someone else thinks jazz should be heard. That is where the HTC 10 surpassed the LG V40. The LG's equalizer has preset choices for both ears. The HTC 10 has a separate equalizer for each ear that you set each range individually. Complete freedom of choice. That allows you to adjust the sound for each ear. Which takes into consideration any hearing discrepancies someone may have. I have high frequency hearing loss that is different in each ear. With the HTC 10, I can still get perfect sound in each ear that is impossible to get in LG V40.

I've never needed a different equalizer for each ear that is a bit odd, meanwhile there is a custom equalizer setting on the V40.

And there is a left right balance adjustment. As far as adjusting the output to each ear - which I guess you only one with headphones (does it bother you in a car?) Then some apps might have what you want - like Jet audio has a lot of options too. Or maybe a custom equalizer app - I assume they exist, never looked.

it was so useful at work. Occasionally at home too. can't find the remote to the projector in room _____ or of course it's batteries are dead. smurf that noise - LG remote - look up projector name _____ and BAM I'm turning that merf on at setting up while another mook is running around the building looking for some AAA's.

Or you know - meeting is boring - it needs to be over - I'm an azzhat anyway - blip - projector off in mid presentation . . . . . GO get lunch.

SO I don't miss the LED lights because I got to love the 2nd screen on the V20 and miss it now. I liked that the icons were fairly easy to see and I didn't have to monkey with led color settings to get it to tell me which notification I missed. Something almost no mobile got right other than blackberry. So instead I had time and icons on the 2nd screen and I know what was there.

The Always on Screen isn't quite the same - but similar. I wish I could make the notification panel bigger (taller) and the writing a bit bigger.

I never looked either, and never thought I needed it. But once I used it, it was amazing due to my particular hearing loss. (Each ear is different) And like I said before, the LG V40's equalizer has presets which I don't care for. But actually, thanks for the idea to look for one. That's a great idea and I will. Cars don't matter because I haven't driven in 20 years. I take Uber or Lyft.
 
well like I said there is a custom setting on the LG hardware equalizer. It's at the bottom of the list though - so you have to scroll all the way down and when you select custom - the sliders turn on.

Otherwise they are just lines.

Thank you very much. I missed the "Custom" setting. That should do the trick.

I had to tell you that the "custom" setting did make all the difference. So thank you very much once again!
 
you're welcome. Now if I can get some more customization on the AOD I'll be happier.

OH and I miss the IR blaster. I mean it's just so useful. (looks up arduino and IR emitters)

I had never heard of the AOD. But since you guys started talking about it, I gave it a try. And I like it.
Then the IR blaster. I had one 2 phones ago, so I understand why you miss it. I have a 2013 Samsung Smart TV and Optimum Cable in New York. The cable app has a wifi remote in it that works fairly well. Maybe you can find that type of remote? Good luck.
 
No AOD for me. I've got a watch for telling time, besides, I try to keep things to a minimum on my phone. My wife's phone dings and beeps for all kind of notifications. I only want to know when I get a text, get a call, or have a winning bid on eBay. LoL
 
  • I use my phone for everything! The usual calls & texts. Then add games, shopping, music, casting movies to my TV and most importantly my schedule. I use a great app (that I beta test for) to take the place of my short term memory (which I lost years ago: I forgot where I put it). ;)
I truly couldn't live without it. Unlike you, I have close to 200 apps installed. Over the past 5 to 10 years, it has taken the place of my laptop.
 
I don't often have the sound up so I will find myself looking for the icons (on my V20 this was on the second screen and easy to spot ) to see missed call or text or email.

Back in the day I used the LED lights (as this thread started on) on my motos or note 3 to blink one color or another (or in sequence moto's would do that) to let me know I missed something.

And back further in the day I had a crackberry (blackberry) and it's LED blinker did the same thing - but was a set color scheme.

Useful as all hell. One of the things liked immediately about the second screen was the always available notification piece. SO I like the AOD mostly - but I can't seem to get missed call on it.

I'm guessing that the second screen on the V20 is different from the V40? It just acts as a mask to hide the notch now.
 
I had mentioned in a different post about 2 apps that I use. Unfortunately, they have nothing to do with the AOD, but they work. One flashes the camera flash and the other puts a large notification on your screen. They are:
1.Missed Call/ SMS Reminder Pro: for
pop-ups
2.Flash on Call Premium
Check them out if you haven't already.
