Hey guys, is it normal that my phone is still running the June first security update? I don't have an option to check for updates and nothing pops up on its own.. any suggestions? Thank you!

First, we need to know who your carrier is. Different carriers put out the updates at different times.
Second, if you have the LG V40, you should have the option to check for updates.
1. Go to settings by pulling down your notification bar and tapping on the gear in the upper right.
2. Then tap on the "General" heading.
3. Scroll down to the very bottom. The first setting should be "KnockON". The second should be "System Updates".
4. Tap on "System Updates" and this is what you should see:

5. Then tap on whatever you want to check. The headings are self-explanatory.
6. If you're not getting the automatic updates, you have that turned off. Tap on "Automatic security updates" and make sure it is turned on and the time is set for a period when your phone is usually on.

Please let us know if this helped. That way if someone else has the same problem, they'll know if they should follow this. Good luck.

Ok great thanks I'm gonna try those steps and I have a factory unlocked one that I believe was destined for the South Asian markets, that's why I didn't put which carrier I'll try the above mentioned steps thanks

I only have the 'Android Security Patch level' in the about section in the settings under the software info section.. and clicking on it brings be to a web site explaining the patches but there's no option to download and install on my phone nor on the site it brings me too,

That explains why our settings are so different. Sorry I couldn't help.

It's ok... But my phone is unlocked from the factory though.. shouldn't matter which carrier right?! Could you guide me on how to check for a security update anyways?😁

I did already, at least for my phone. That was my first post to your question. But our phones have completely different Setting titles. Yours has an "Update Center" and mine has "System Updates".

Just reread my first post if you have the same settings.

I didn't think so until I saw your post. I've only used Verizon since I started using Smartphones. I know different brands of phones are completely different but I thought the same phone with different carriers would be basically the same. I'm just as surprised as you are. But I just reread your posts and you purchased an unlocked phone and you live in Canada. So I think that your phone was unlocked or possibly the different country that could be responsible for the differences. Since it was unlocked, the carrier was unknown, so I don't think it's the carrier. But I've never purchased an unlocked phone so maybe someone else can enlighten us.

Ok awesome thank you so much!😁

Unlocked phones are usually on a different schedule of updates from carrier locked phones.

Ahhh ok I see, and I'm assuming it's gonna take forever for LG to release stuff for me then 🤦🏻‍♂️😑

The other day XDA posted this article on Android security patches, it's a good summary of the situation:
https://www.xda-developers.com/how-android-security-patch-updates-work/
Basically, the Android platform is pretty messed up as far as security updates overall. But for your own peace of mind, just apply some common sense whenever you're using your phone phone to do anything involving online interactions and don't focus too much on the security patch issue. Here's some other articles that are contrary to the conventional media hype you might find worth taking into consideration:
