It has cutouts for the screen of course
seems like to me you need a new battery, also malware can cause your battery to drain quicker. If you notice your cell phone battery is draining quicker and its hot. I would suggest using a app like avast to scan your phone for viruses and or malware. Just my 2 cents, hope it helps.

Those kind of apps are basically malware themselves.
Pure snakeoil.
Android does not need any of them.
In fact, if the phone is running hot already, putting some anti-whateverware app that runs constantly on it will just make it run hotter.

How overloaded with apps is the device?
Did you leave enough 'breathing room' for whatever game you are playing?
A good rule of thumb seems to be to keep your internal memory at or below 70% of its capacity.

Any game that requires a substantial amount of RAM is going to cause heat to be produced.
The way you hold the device should allow air to get to the hottest part that you can feel.
Giving the device a break once in a while is a good idea, too.
You actually could hold the phone in front of a small fan while you play. It's actually kind of nice during the summer.

There is a temperature reading, storage useage/capacity, memory useage/capacity, and all kinds of other info about your device.
The storage capacity is what I was referring to, but the other info is valid as well.
Try to keep the internal memory near 70%, and don't overfill your SD card either.
Clear your recent apps, then check your memory use to see how much the system itself uses.
This way you can see how much is actually left over for you to play with.
It is possible that whatever game you are playing is putting too much of a load onto your device.
It is just as possible that you may have apps running constantly in the background that you don't need.
Cleaning apps, anti-virus/anti-malware apps, booster apps, cooling apps, battery apps, memory expander apps, etc. are all junk and none of them need to be on your device.
All they do is eat up resources and sell your information.
There are very few exceptions.
I know of a few good cleaners (most of which don't work on modern devices) and only one decent 'security' app that I still don't recommend to let leave run on a device.
If you have any of the above, try uninstalling them and then see if your device overheats when you play.
You can also clear recent apps and then check your memory use again, to see if there is any improvement.

The three major sources of heat in any phone is the CPU, the radios and the battery ... specifically when the first is processing, the second is transmitting and the third discharging. Playing an online game, especially on a phone with a larger screen is going to satisfy all conditions.
Yes, heat is the enemy of electronics, but that's why thermal circuitry is built into all modern phones which will throttle or shut the device down before and serious damage happens. It may shorten the life of the device and hurt performance while it's hot, but otherwise is "normal" behavior.
Samsung loves to put a lot of battery in as little space as possible which exacerbates the problem. You would have thought they learned their lesson after the Note 7 debacle.
If it's too hot to hold, you should really contact Samsung for a replacement as it could be an issue with the battery, but if it's only warm and otherwise functions normally, you can ignore it, or put it in a cooling case as @Dannydet suggested.
I assume you aren't trying to charge the phone at the same time you are playing? That adds an additional heat source.
