Torrents on EVO 4G

I'm switching to Sprint's EVO from the iPhone. I noticed that there are some BitTorrent apps available for Android.

Has anyone tried them before? Do they function properly speed-wise (3G networks)? How do you deal with port forwarding and such?

Also, what do you think Sprint's reaction will be if someone uses torrents heavily on the EVO?

from what i understand the torrent apps on the evo are mostly to control your computer's torrent application. so you can pause and restart and even add new torrents... but you're not actually downloading it to your phone.
 
Hey, thats what the $10 a month is for right, no caps!! I used a torrent program on my winmo phone, but mostly through wifi and it worked great with very little setup. I am hoping the android apps are equally easy to use.
 
I've tethered phones to torrent files before. It's just another file transfer protocol so it works. Never tried it *on* the phone since I tend to torrent random things that aren't for phones (Linux distros or other software distributed with the bittorrent protocol)

Which carrier did you use it on?
 
No native BitTorrent apps at the moment, but never know their could be someone out their trying their hand at it.

In the past I used my Mogul and Touch Pro as modems on Sprint and occasionally torrented things. There was a time where I had no ISP for a month or two so I just used that. Not an ideal solution but it was better than nothing.

Well, except you can't download a torrented file. You know, the whole purpose of being able to torrent on the phone.

So to answer your question...why torrent? Well, so I can grab an album or movie on the fly when I'm away from my computer. That's why.
 
I never did much torrenting on Windows Mobile but wmTorrent came in handy a few times when I was on a trip and looking for an audio book. It maybe "lame", but a few hours of audio book is better than going crazy listening to only country music on a 20 hour road trip.
 
torrentFu allows you to control your utorrent via android phone. It's a good way to start a download when you're out of the house and have it done once you return.

Controlling a torrent through your phone is different than downloading it through your phone =P

And still better than nothing. I don't think the OP has plans to torrent complete discographies on a regular basis, but merely would like to have the ability to torrent a album, book, tv show, or movie from time-to-time when needed. It would be useful, and there's no reason, from a technical standpoint, that the EVO shouldn't be capable. Especially on 4G and/or WiFi. With that said, if you think it's lamesauce then you don't need to do it, right?

I don't. But when most people think of torrenting, they don't think of a book, or a discography. Hell those files are small enough to download without a torrent.

She is talking about downloading a zip file with every album by a particular artist.

Also, the bittorrent protocol has lots of pros and cons. Since it is distributed the way it is, you can download at really high speeds thanks to lots of individuals sharing bits of the total file at their own rate. Added up it can be great. I downloaded the latest Ubuntu ISO in about 3 minutes at work last week. Granted I get something sick like 90+ mbps when I run speed tests here but still...awesome.
